Has anyone used a pypes system on a 68-72 Tempest wagon? what system and extras did you use ,where do the pipes exit at the rear?

On the '68, where is the fuel tank? Tail pipes are the issue depending on fuel tank location and spare tire well.

For my '66 Tempest wagon the tank is in the center like a coupe but I am going to have to deal with the spare tire well on the passenger side. Cass and I have talked about this but until I do the install and then drop the body on the frame I will not know.

I think I know how to make it work. I already have the pieces from another set up. I am going to run the pipes in the rear right under the cargo well. You can't make them exit on the drivers side because of the gas tank.

They don't...and obviously the techy didn't know what had to be done to modify the regular system for the wagon.

I think I will do the same modifications to the tailpipes the guy on the Pypes site did.

Dynomax makes a set up for a 78 and up El Camino. The front pipes don't fit very well. The rear exits out the back. I will take one of the pipes and see if it clears the cargo well.

It's my understanding that the only difference between a coupe system and a wagon system would be the tailpipes. As far as I know, Pypes does not have any plans to make rear exit or side exit tailpipes for wagons. However Big injun is right, you can just make the modifications that are shown in the Pypes gallery linked above if you are interested in a side exit system. It looks like the customer with the wagon in the gallery bought an SGA30 non-xpipe system, downpipes (probably DGA13 or DGA20), and turndowns (PVD10) to make the tailpipe modification.

The problem with that is, on a 68 and up wagon, the exhaust is near the gas tank. The gas tank is on the side behind the quarter panel. The earlier wagons could use the same exhaust system as a early El Camino.

Yep, more poor service from PY. It looks like 328 posts worth I guess. I guess it's also ridiculous that every PY rep doesn't know that a Pypes A-body system could be modified and used on a wagon considering the phones are ringing off the hook with Pontiac wagon owners needing a performance exhaust. Nice agenda topic.

This is the drivers side rear pipe. It looks like it fits, I had it up under the car and the bends are in the right places. I did not have it over the rear end, I need to drop that down to fit it on. Jegs sells the whole kit for about $100.00, you won't need the front pipes because they are for a El Camino. There are part numbers on the pipes, maybe you can buy them seperate. It's 2.25 inch pipe.

The point i was trying to make is that PYPES does make an exhaust that will work on a wagon the salespeople just need a footnote listing what extra parts you will need.

Agreed. This is a good point........ Announcing that you got more poor service from PY and you won't do business with them again sounds like a different point all together.

Ken K...Pypes is a performance exhaust. Look at those bends. Midas has better crap than those tailpipes...

It will work fine for what I am using it for. It's not a race car, it's not a GTO. It's a Tempest wagon and that's all it will ever be.

Actually Dave those tailpipes don't look half bad. For Ken's application they probably will be fine. I really question the fit though. I'll be curious to hear how they fit.

The fit looks good, I won't know until everything is on the car. They are made to go under a gas tank on a El Camino. The wagon does not have the gas tank in the same spot. The bends follow the bends in the wagon cargo well. The pipes dont go strait out the back. they angle a little bit toward the corners. The pipes are no where near as bad as the tail pipes on a factory car. Go to a muffler shop and see what they tell you when you want a set of pipes bent up. They won't touch it with a 10 foot poll.
