I have two sets of Summit brand hydraulic valve lifters here purchased in
the '97 time frame. Am wondering when all the quality on these started
to go bad. Not sure if I should even think about using them or not.

well just by coincidence....i just found a set of summit lifters I bought in like 2000. once you take one apart you will notice there is a lot of difference between summit brand and Johnson/wolverine brand of the day.

Agree, The Johnson/Wolverine Lifters were some nice pieces even in 2000.
You can assume that Summit was going to the low cost "Alternative Source"
but not sure of the exact time frame.

ok...breakdown of the Wolverine lifter. And YES it is right side up on everything except PY Album.

pushrod cup (that seperates from spacer)
spacer
pintle valve/ restrictor plate (easy to get cocked upon re-assembly)
Inner lifter valve
spring
outer lifter body.

So Tom as you mentioned that the RAIV lifters actually had a "special" pushrod cup....i would expect If i wanted to "limit" the travel of THIS lifter I could...actually intall a shim between the pushrod cup and "spacer" effectively increasing the OVERALL stack height of the internal valve assembly; therefore, limiting the internal valves total movement capability??

Now the Summit brand circa 1995 ..ish... I do NOT recall exactly but that would be a fair guess.


NOTE: the pushrod cup "ASSEMBLY" is made completely different.

There are two different lifter bodies on the ones I have. One body has a groove toward the bottom of it
and the other does not. looks to me like two different manufacturers maybe.
Have not taken one of either apart. Just wondering when the lifter wear problem started to show its
self. Not sure if I would even use them, still have two sets of NOS GM lifters.

and the plot thickens....
upon FULL disassembly of the Johnson/Wolverine lifters it seems there is more there than meets the eyes (at least MINE....)
so there is a small "cap" on the bottom of the internal lifter valve. INSIDE of it is a very very small spring and a valve disc. BEST to NOT remove this as the spring is quite small, thin and invisible unless you are working in a science lab!!!

FWIW...in changing from the "hair pin" clips to INTERNAL LOCK RINGS...the size is 11/16. (seems I read a post that they used 5/8...so thats what I got...nope that would be wrong!))
