Thanks for the pictures.

So by the looks of things the valve guides have been replaced with 1/2” od guides, can’t tell if this was done to all 16 of them, or just to the guides that needed it,

The valves are aftermarket.

The keepers are aftermarket.

The valve bowls are stock, so they have not been mangled.

The chambers have not been touched which is good as the needed sharp break / fuel sheer above the intake valve is still there!

The exh side has been given a 3 angle valve job which to me in terms of the way these iron heads are machined in stock form leaves the main 45 degree seat way to narrow for good long term street life with today’s no Lead fuel!

The valve job on the intake side has been given a 15 degree top cut, which while it does pick up low lift flow a tad, it cuts into high lift flow numbers and also it uses up needed meat for the heads to recive another clean up valve job with out sinking the valve a lot, and that in turn cuts into high lift air flow even more and of course compression,

For a street motor I like a .070” wide exh seat, especially if spring seat pressures are over 115 PSI .

The retainers are aftermarket, and the valve guides have been topped for the needed positive seals.

The springs look like Comp Cams 995.
This have a flat wire damper in them that I hate!!!

If the time is not taken to unstack each spring assembly and polish over both sharp ends of those flat wire springs then once the motor is fired up those sharp ends go right to work sawing into things and putting fine metallic grit into the motor!

These flat wire springs have been known to collapse with age, and when they do they wind themselves all the way out the main spring where they can hold the valve open, and or break off and get down into the motor, and or snap a valve if racing spring pressure and rpms are used.

If I was to buy these heads I would be deducting the price of re-fitting them with a good set of duel valve springs and also the cost of a shop to get the bad ones out, set up the new ones and then re-assemble the heads,

In any other universe, those would be considered ready to run heads.

They are very nice heads for a pump gas 455 and are better flowing than 6X in stock form. Here's a link to a set sold on eBay in Feb.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/25220949603...UAAOSwiLdV9XvD

Not saying you'll get that much as there must have some numbers matching mania at play on that sale.

Keith, I recently sold a core set on our local Phoenix Craig's for $450. They were clean, but bone stock and in need of everything. Never been touched that I could tell.

I think you'll be able to pull $500 without much trouble. Or keep them for the 70. You may need them one day. I'm still running one set in my 67 GTO, and two more sets are on my shelf.

I'd like to find a set closer to the east coast, just to have on hand.

I was able to get down to 12 flat with un ported 96s on a 455. Fine street head for a big engine.

Is that picture of the bowls one of the center exhaust? I'd want to inspect the the fill in this area on both sides of both heads to see the blend and quality of the pour. This is where it matters most.

The crossover fill blend in the port by the valve is very smooth. The fill isnt aluminum. Appears to be some sort of hard block cement. Couldnt even scratch it with a screwdriver! Very hard stuff in there!

Can you explain what “at lift” means?

It means he had a set of nicely ported 96s that flowed 220cfm with only .212 lift at the valve. 220cfm is about what they flow as cast but at .600 lift.
He has a sweet set of iron heads. Whoever ported them knew what they were doing.

There is no way that a ported iron or common aftermarket head even ported will flow 220 cfm at only .212” lift at a 28” depression!

There would have to be some major leakage going on in that flow test to produce that number!

Maybe if the flow test was done at 35 inches or so.

Are those big block chevy screw in studs? I just had a set of #16s done and they had screw in studs but they were bottle neck. The bb chevy studs we put in in their place look like the studs in this set.

If I were building a pump gas 455, I'd be all over those heads, even at $800. I would take them over the 6X any day.
