Fill the filter or not?
Just for fun. Behave.

I've never filled my oil filter. I always change the oil hot though, so there's still oil in the journals, on the bearings etc. when I refire the car. Have never had any issues. I do account for the filter's capacity with the new oil fill.
I can see the merits of filling the filter, I'm just too lazy to do it.

I have better things to do than prefilling filters.
If any filter, or engine manufacturer can give me a valid reason that I should be doing it, that's fine. Until then I'll be using my time in some other way. Until there's a factual reason other than, my uncles shirt tail relative told me they do it just because some guy that used to work at a gas station said it should always be done. I'm going to be doing it the same way I was shown by my father, which was a mechanic most of his adult life. My father also started his automotive career as a lubrication expert at the local Pontiac dealer, and had a certificate that he was trained as a lubrication specialist by Pontiac. He also never prefilled oil filters during oil changes. If your prefilling the center hole you're subjecting your engine to possibly contaminated oil that is on the clean side of the filter. The oil on the center of the oil filter goes directly to the bearings. Any contamination will be promptly sent right to the bearings. If you're going to do it, at least do it correctly. Plug the center hole, and only fill the outside row of holes, or the dirty side of the filter. That eliminates any chance that contaminants will enter the filter on the clean side. I doubt any of the habitual filter fillers are even performing the operation as it should be correctly performed. Yes it can hurt, if performed the wrong way. |

Sirrotica is I could package one of the filtration kits you recommend in a tight little package out of sight under the hood I might would do it but with EFI and AC I just don’t see it happening

LOL! I don't think there are too many people changing their oil on a dirt or stone driveway. Do you pour your oil into your valve cover from a hermetically sealed oil reservoir while wearing a surgical mask?

http://www.frantzfilters.com/ If you don't want it under the hood it can easily be in the trunk, or anywhere you can access it easily. There is absolutely no need to mount it under the hood if you feel it's too crowded. It also can be mounted in any position, upside down, right side up, sideways. |

I don’t. All the cars I owned before 2004 had filters that mounted horizontally, so it wouldn’t have been possible anyway.

If you're pouring oil into the sump, it's going to go through the oil filter. If you're pouring it into the center of the oil filter it's going directly to the bearings. Anything in a bulk oil container, such as a car dealership, field service truck with bulk oil dispenser, any funnel sitting around a shop, stored in the side boxes of a service truck, can be contaminated. I did road service for years and it's not really hard to contact contaminated oil, or oil dispensing equipment. In case you weren't paying attention, I already posted that there is no standard for new oil. I know you're sure that there is no way that oil could be contaminated in a huge bulk system in a refinery right? Then be pumped into a bottle unknowingly by the refinery personnel and sealed with contaminated material in with the oil. The people at Cat diesel believe it can happen, and recommend against prefilling any oil filter because of possible contamination. They recommend if you fill any filter on their equipment (hydraulic, fuel, oil) that you only fill the exterior (dirty portion) of the filter with the center hole (clean area) plugged with something like a plastic plug. Here's a Youtube video made by a Cat service tech telling how he, as a road service tech, services equipment and the how and why that Cat definitely recommends NOT prefilling filters. He has a picture of a fuel filter with the warning stenciled right on their filters "DO NOT PRE FILL FILTER". He stresses that the only time he prefills an oil filter is if he is starting a brand new engine for the first time, or starting a piece of equipment that has sat and all the residual oil is drained back into the sump. He also plugs the center hole as demonstrated with a plastic dust plug. Maybe you should watch and learn? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6MLDH0zTpw BTW, the equipment that he's working on many times cost as much as most people's houses or more, I'm sure he's not going to screw up their equipment by pulling a bone headed move such as filling an oil filter with contaminated oil in the clean side causing the bearings to be taken out. Believe whatever you'd like, I'll stick with facts I know to be true.

Yes I fill the filter, for the extra 2 minutes to fill it, I feel it's just piece of mind. oil to the bearings faster has to be better.

So far, 70% treat their engine right and pre-fill the oil filter.
2% have no clue what an oil filter is because they go to Jiffylube. |
