hopefully this isnt a repeat,...i searched but didnt find anything in the archives....

when i bought my 63 bonneville, the owner said it had 389, but said she wasnt really sure.

how can i check for sure? is there a code somewhere on the block?

You can check the casting # on the block next to the distributor and there's a code on the right front side of the block under the passenger side head.

also if you get McCarthys book,it will have a pic of the "transfer lug"kind of triangle projection on the pass side of the dist. that identified the block on the assm line as a NON 389 block.Tom

Going by the "lug" is always correct there have been exceptions. I know for sure because I had an exception.

found the code under a half inch of sludge....543680,...its a 389.

above it it had in larger digits..."N2".
date code?
