Default shaker door operation troubleshooting

I'm sorting out the survivor '72 TA, and have an issue with the shaker door actuators.

Yellow/black wire is attached to the shaker, and shaker is grounded.

When the key power is on (prior to start), the shaker door opens.

It does this with the wire harness attached to the activator switch at the pedal and with the harness removed from the switch, same result.

Any ideas?

Try putting a test light to the connector at the pedal without being plugged in. If it has power on both sides, somehow power is being fed backwards from the other end. Try looking at the harness laying between the alternator and valve cover. (You know that mess of wires that are soldered together and wrapped with tape) Look for possible rubbing through to feed power to the black/yellow scoop wire.

Just a thought.

What fuse location in the fuse box is the power lead plugged into?

I checked the downshift switch. Switch is working correctly, closing the circuit at WOT.

With power on, there is no 12V power at either terminal end (pink or yellow) at the pedal downshift switch and the pink and yellow wire do not ohm out to eachother when disconnected from the switch.

As I mentioned before, the yellow/black shaker wire has 12 volts constant with key on. It shares a harness lead with the pink 12 volt that goes to the distributor, but there are no signs of these wires accidentally touching.

Here's a picture of the interior harness block and switch. Steve, can you tell if the power lead is in the correct location based on this picture?

It's not extra. I think all shaker cars had those. It appears to delay the opening of the shaker. At least that's what it did on mine when I swapped mine to a non resistor switch.

If it opens up when you just turn the key on before you start the car does it then close when you start the car & it's running. Does it then work the way it should when the car is running?? Such as when you hit the gas to WOT does it then open back up & close when you let off the throttle ?? Also do you have power on both the yellow & the pink wire at both ends of the connector, at the switch & at the actuator to when the key is on ?? Then check to see if you have power to both or either wire when the key is off ?? If you have power with the key off at either wire you may have a direct short to ground & when you turn the key on it's causing it to back feed to the actuator making it open. ?? Just throwing out questions for you to check.

The resistors wired like that are used to ground the electrical spike when the solenoid is de-energized. the same reason you see them on A/C compressor connectors.

I have the original in my 72 T/A and a NOS spare with one as well.

Gregg,

Did it just start doing this or has it been that way? Sounds like someone wired it to open with the key on.

IIRC, that "extra" resistor was only used on '72 model year. Correct guys?

73s still had it even though the shakers were not functional.
