Default PONTIAC IN DASH TACH

Hoping some of you gurus out there can let me know how to test a pontiac in dash tach by itsself ? I picked up one for my 68 GTO and later got another one with a rally dash package I couldn't pass up. The following summer I got a hood in pretty good shape but it already has the hole cut-out for the factory hood tach and would rather just go the hood tach route on the GTO and keep the clock in the dash. I plan on selling them to help in the purchase of a hood tach but would like to know if they are both functional - I was told they were from the purchasers but everyone knows how that goes.... Each tach has three small studs and one insulated stud with a nut on it, one has a push on contact for a wiring connector on the stud. I think they are for different applications since one has the bottom mounting hole off to the side and the other is straight up and down. Will try and get pictures posted of them but for right now just want to know if they work or are just for parts.

I think your gonna need a motor with a point ignition to test them .

Both of those are for a car with points ignition only. The single terminal on the backside is a dead giveaway.

They would not work off of anything modern such as Pertronix. One looks like a '68 and the other a '69.

Default I'M DONE WITH IT

Haven't had any luck or contact on seeing how to test these and can't see how just hooking up one wire to the points distributor would make them work, I always assumed you need a posotive and negative power source along with the tach signal from the coil to be functional.

Soooo...... If anyone can locate me a front upper grille for a 71 Grand Prix or a lower grille for a 72 Grand Prix can have one of the tachs of their choice. A poster has confirmed that one is a 68 and the other a 69 so let me know which one. I will also pay the shipping charges so if you can lay your hands on one of these grilles in your area or have one available let me know.

This Grand Prix has been a nightmare from day one and just want to get this #$$&*$ thing going so any help would be appreciated.

Default GRAND PRIX GRILLES

I have a few nice grilles in stock, I'll check which are the nice ones up or down..The guys are right about the hook-up to the (-) side of coil. However they forget to tell you to run a ground jumper from case to ground side of battery.Original Pontiac tachs didn't start using Chevrolet (12volt) hook-up circuit boards until 1972. Except the earlier Pontiacs which had a TI distributor. You'll also find the repos and almost all current repaired originals are repaired with the 12volt hook-up.But then there will be (2) insulated hook-ups and hopefully marked.

Hmmn, my 69 4spd GP has an original in-dash tach.
I also have a Pertronix ignition.
Connecting to the negative side of the coil allows the tach to function!
I will admit that my tach is off in the BAD way; at 4K indicated the engine is turning 4400, at least per the digital tach on my Craftsman digital timing light.

I'd like to know where I could send the tach to be calibrated.
