Default 1970 455 Carb

New to the forum.

I have a 1970 GTO 455 HO with an Edelblock Carb.
What is the correct carb for this year/model car?

Thanks

Automatic or manual?
if Manual, the carb is the same as a RAIII or RAIV carb which means EXPENSIVE - 7040273

In that case, if you are TRULY going for an orignal (not a restamp), you will pay $3500 for the carb (approximately) and you STILL might need a rebuild

I forgot to ask if your car was a Ram Air Equipped car.

Ram Air Cars
California cars - Ram Air Manual carb - 7040563
49-State cars - Ram Air Manual carb - 7040273

Non Ram Air Car
California - Manual trans - 7040567EES
49-State - Manual trans - 7040267/7040567

Here's a link for Carb information for you

Hearing that the original will NOT be necessary!

The car is a 1970 GTO 455 4spd
Factory Air
3.31 gear
Cardinal Red
Red Interior

According to PHS

Corrected.

No evaporative emissions control system (EES) listed on PHS(code 711)? Then it's the 49-State version.

Thanks for all the info!
Trying to get this car together right. What would be suggested as a suitable replacement for the factory carb?

7040267 would be correct --- IF it was Not sold new in Cali (EES as mentioned) --- and was Not HD Air Inlet (RamAir) option 601.

As far as a suitable replacement to "tailor" for peak operation , about any 68-70 Pontiac QJet would be okay . Then buy the right jets rods hangers from Cliff going by the displacement, cam, comp ratio and gearing for the fine tune .

7029268 or 7040268 would be pretty much Direct Bolt-On replacements per specs.
And not too hard to find or too expensive.

7040262 and 7040264 probably next best.

Any QJet will mount up and run the engine.
But probably not to peak levels.

Baron,

So the question from a Pontiac lover for many years with his 1st GTO is without breaking the bank AND keeping performance in line what would the seasoned vets do?

This car was delivered to
Plainview Farm Equipment CO.
Main St
Plainview, NE

per docs

Vin# 242370P178360

#1 - find a 7040267 (correct) 150-500 range - used.
These are not stratosphere priced like RA carbs.

#2 - or find a 7040268 (direct replacement) usually 100-250 range used.
In later years - the 7040268 would be the factory issue Service Replacement for the 0267 carb.

Some carb specialists have specific numbers in stock, Like Cliff Ruggles and CarbKing and can sell them fully rebuilt or fully concourse restored. They are both PY members.
Would contact them about an 0267.

You can also try the general remanufacturer sellers - AutoZone AdvanceAuto etc ....
The thing about these is - usually the number you initially request - is not the number that comes in the box . They take carbs of all numbers and turn them into generic replacements that fit multi years and multi displacements . Very Generic and low performance.

If you get lucky (sometimes people do) and it comes in as a 0267 or 0268 - it will still need to have the proper jets rods hangers etc ... confirmed and replaced.

I have some other places you could contact too.
But getting the suggested specs from Cliff would be first step before contacting these others.

Baron The car is at the paint shop as we speak.
It was Atoll Blue?
I am going back with the Cardinal Red

I have some numbers that I scribbled down before I purchased the car during due diligence.

ST70 24237 PON 1616690 BDY
TR 257 58E PNT
05A 24

Please keep in mind this was some chicken scratch that I put on a fax from 9/23/2010 looking at the date right now.

If anything looks funny I will have to go to the shop and confirm.

BTW I am currently bidding on the referenced part. I'm the high bidder but reserve not met.

05A is build date = May , the 1st week
The shipping date on your PHS is probably in May.

So eBay carb is quite a bit too early - as in only if going for the perfect date match.
That is a REAL nice core . It has not been reman'd before and not had an Automatic Trans vacuum nipple added - which happens to most Manual carbs.

For certain prices, the exact date wouldn't matter to me so much as the right application number . But for tall coin - i'd want the date to be right too.

Looks like your car was (58)Granada Gold, with (E)Sandalwood Vinyl Top, and (257)Sandalwood Bucket Seat Interior. Friend of mine's wife has that same color combo on her 70 455HO Automatic A/C car. They deleted the vinyl top.

2 more carb prospects you can check on - one of them is Cliff from about 8 months ago. You can send these guys a PM.

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...hlight=7040267

This one is Service Replacement dated in 1974
http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...hlight=7040267

PY member Steve V in Raleigh has mentioned having some of these carbs in the past also.

Baron,

Please disregard all Trim info from previous post.
Info is correct but not for my car. I must have scribbled down from another car I was looking at during same time.
My car is definitely a Cardinal Red Car with Red interior. I will go to paint shop on tomorrow and get all info off of tag and post here. Also will attempt to send PM to Cliff as he is showing currently on line.

Thanks for the help and will post pictures on tomorrow from Paint Shop.

Red on Red works REAL GOOD on a 70 GTO .
455HO 4spd AC 3.31 is a helluva fine car.

Have you confirmed the engine is still the original ?
WA block - 64 heads

If it still has the WA/64 engine with matching VIN -- would definitely at least give a try to get a good 0267 carb. Should also have a dual snorkel air breather.

WA Block for sure I found that code.
where is the code for the heads?
Where do I find the VIN code?
I purchased a dual snorkel from Performance Years
Is this a common GTO 455 color combo, engine, trans, A/C, etc.??

I've seen quite a few 455 cars in Red/Red ... Hdtops and Verts.
Its just one of the more "top shelf" combos.
But have seen 455 cars in all combo's ... no clear cut majority.
Most times they will have good option content .

Head code is on the center exhaust ports.

VIN stamp is next to timing cover ... unless it was built in Fremont California.
Fremont could have it anywhere in the area i circled in Red.
