70 GTO hardtop rear shoulder belts/child seats
I have two small kids whose booster seats require shoulder belts. I would like to be able to have them ride with me. I know that '69 convertibles had optional shoulder belts. Were rear shoulder belts ever an option on '70 hardtops? Or is there a good way to add some without looking like too much of an add on?

Yes, but I've only seen them once. It attached on the package tray. I don't know if I've ever seen any pictures. I saw them on a 69 beater and tried to buy the car the the owner wouldn't part with it.

Good question.
I had Snake Oyl restore a set in one car I did, years ago. I bet they could advise you.... which ever way you decide. They are knowledgeable, helpful people to work with. http://www.ssnake-oyl.com/ I always get new material put on my belts.....material is so old and stitcing sometimes dryrotted....not worth the risk, imo. |

I beleive you can take a pair of front shoulder belts and bolt them to the rear package tray and they would look original. There are 2 holes in an embossed area under package tray near speaker that i think will match up, but i havent tried it.

I have only found seen two set-ups...in all of the cars I have bought and sold, stripped in the local salvage yards, seen at shows.....mainly Buick and Olds.
I have a set in my 70 GS conv and my friend has a set in his 70 GSX....his car is featured in the article below.....should be very easy to use the headliner shoulder belt to mount to the package tray. http://www.buickperformance.com/RearShoulderBelts.htm |

Thanks guys. Sounds like I will give the guys at Ssnake-oyl a call and see if they have the shoulder belt and mount. If not, I can get the belt and fab a mount. GStage1, those are great pictures!

I have a 70 GTO with this option (452), the belts are different then the front shoulder belts, the buckle is on the long belt attached to the package tray ,and the blade end achhors to the floor. The large buckles are used.

Seems like a package mount shoulder belt is the wrong place to mount one.
Not saying it is, just on the surface thinking about it / in your minds eye. Wonder why it wasnt mounted down low to the chassis floor? Jeff |

When I get my car back from getting the new trans installed I will definitely check out the mounting points and see what I need. R70GOAT, do you have any pictures of how it mounts to the floor?

Search all the forums for more info. It has been discussed in various places. The body manual shows a diagram and here is one in a car..

The blade end attaches to the floor using the same location as the lap belt. My car is stored in a friends pole barn till mid April when he gets back from Florida so I can't help with any photos right now.

shoulder belts
I will try to get some pics. I took the rear shoulder belts and couplers out of a 2000 grand prix gtp. I actually fabbed the package tray from the gp into the package tray of my 70 gto, but you could add the mounting point for the retractor. The nice part of these belts is the fact that they are self adjusting and will lock when necessary. The couplers mount in the factory holes in the floor.
