Got to run against "Mooneshine" a famous Jr Stocker
Back at the beginning of July at Island Dragway's nostalgia event, I got to line up twice against the Ronca Brothers Mooneshine Jr Stocker. I talked to Tommy Ronca and he told me alot about the car and his experience racing back in the 60's. Tommy contributed quite a bit of pictures and content to the Doug Boyce book "Junior Stock, Drag Racing the Family Sedan". Mooneshine is featured on pages 117-119. This national record holder was sold after its initial racing days and amazingly rediscovered and restored back its period as raced condition.
I wasn't around in the 60's but I totally geek out over these cars and have a bunch of the books about 60's stock drag racing. It was thrill to meet him and race against him. He ran right on the 14 second minimum N4 dial in time trials so he beat me as I run mid 14's. We met up again in first round but his 2-4barrel 265 coughed at the line and I was able to win. I went on to the final and red lit finishing runner up. Very cool that this car is not only out there but racing with its original driver at the wheel. |
