Default DIRT at SMP

They are putting dirt on the race track for a tractor pull. Hope it doesn't rain ?

That track will never hook the same unless they pressure wash the whole dam thing after shoveling the dirt off!

I can't imagine how much 1400 sheets of plywood is gonna cost.

We saw a similar thing here in Michigan. They were supposed to run sprints on dirt inside the Pontiac Silverdome but the dirt was stored outside and froze solid.

They ended up running the cars on the bare concrete. Still a lot of fun.

They used to do tractor pulls inside the Silverdome, too.

The "hot rods" weren't too bad, but when the Super Stocks get up on the turbo(s) the smoke just rolls.

By the end of the event you couldn't see the other side of the arena.

I saw a motocross race/monster truck event at the old Richfield Coliseum where the Cavaliers used to play. Same thing, smoke show.
I saw Led Zeppelin in that building in ‘77 and I was higher after the bike/truck event.

I wouldn't worry one little bit about hurting the track. Plus pullng is usually only 300-350 yards, they're not going to cover the whole track, and shutdown area.

They have covered Bristol Motor Speedway numerous times with dirt to run late models, and sprint cars on it, it hasn't ruined the track. The last time they ran the truck series on dirt.

They run a late model race during the winter in St Louis MO inside. In Tulsa Oklahoma they run a midget event "The Chili Bowl", every January since 1987. They haul in the clay to the Tulsa expo center and build a track for a week to race on every winter.

Besides that, everyone knows, dirt is for racing on, pavement is just so you can get to the racetrack...............

If you didn't take some of the racetrack home with you, Ya got cheated........

1400 sheets of plywood, that's gonna be expensive.....LOL

One other thing, I hope Bader has a good source for clay, because just like a dirt track, the surface is important. Tony Stewart recovered Eldora this year with fresh clay, and had to strip it all off because the clay wasn't suitable when they raced on it. All clay isn't created equal. and doesn't race the same. Pullers always have something to say about the tracks they run on, and how good, or bad, they are prepped. And just as dirt tracks get more and more slippery the more they are run on, so does a pulling surface as the water dries out of it.

Keith. 3/4” X 4’ X 8’ is going for $72 per sheet here

Ohio is sandy from glacier run off. Probably deeper in strata would be clay.

There is a guy that they call Dr. Dirt, for a fee he will come to your track, or source of new clay, and analyze it, tell you what it is composed of, and make a assessment if it will be good clay to race on. He would also tell you if you can add to the clay you have to make it a better racing surface.

Most people have no idea of what is involved in a good racing surface, or in this case pulling surface.

Since they outlawed using sodium chloride on racetracks, the promoters have tried many things to keep dust at a minimum. The clay composition can help, or hurt how much dust comes off the racetrack. too much dust is very detrimental to spectators seeing the action on the track, as well as drivers not being able to see if there is something on the track, been there done that.

Winged sprint cars are the absolute worst offenders for throwing loose dirt, and dust in the air.

You're right Jack, "Feet" not yards...makes a huge difference, length of a football field. Brain fade.

I estimate 60K or so for the plywood with a discount. Knowing Bader, he already has a buyer for the lightly used plywood after the event. Or he will store it and use it again next year. Bader enjoys coming off as a local country bumpkin, but nothing could be further from the truth. You don't end up owning and running one of the best race facilities in the country by being an idiot. He is a very smart and forward thinking guy, just like his dad was. (RIP) I hope they pack the place to the top row and make a zillion dollars. After what they have been through with the pandemic, they deserve it.

Its was a sad day when they paved Redwood Acres 3/8 mile track in Eureka. The new surface is a fast 3/8 mile asphalt surface but its not the same.
Just something about that old dirt track made it fun. We have this Humboldt blue clay around here that racers loved. Seeing them pull the wheels coming out of turns was a sight.

You are so lucky, I had tickets to their show there in 1980. Got a refund after Bonhams passing. That is one stub I wish I still had.

Don't know if anyone was following the actual event. But the 3rd and final day of the event was cancelled in it's entirety due to heavy rain and thunderstorms. They are refunding everyone for the lost day and other stuff. Sounded like the first 2 days were a success. Really sucks for the ownership because likely any and all profits would be made on the third day. Was sad to hear this. I live in southern Ohio, about 170 miles south of Norwalk. We have had an unusual amount of rain for July so far. About 7 inches in the last 10 days. Grass is very green and needing to be cut weekly.

Our grass was/is brown. We had a strong storm come through this afternoon. It might of hit Norwalk before us.
