Crappy Backyard Paint Job finally coming together
Couple of pics of the first stage of polishing on my backyard paint job. Only the hood left to paint.
I was going to go on about the nay sayers, but I'll just say ... it's coming out pretty freakin nice. Certainly requires some post "paint booth" work to get rid of some garbage and peel, but if you put on enough clear that's not a problem at all, in fact kind of a labor of love. About $3000 instead of $10-15,000 ... yes it's not perfectly straight, but it's the best paint and body that's been on the car since I bought it in 1976. End of the month it should have everything painted and installed, by the end of August road worthy with all the polishing done. Pics show results before actual polishing, just sanding and cutting.

Looking good! Nice work! I took two semesters of autobody night school. There was one main thing that I learned. I need to pay someone else to paint my stuff! LOL! I do some paint work. Haven't done a whole vehicle yet though. LOTS of work. Especially when you're anal retentive like me. lol

You and me both
It will be pre-dented too, so I don't have to be too careful with it. I missed a good size dent between the back of the drivers door and the front of the rear wheel, down below the belt line. Might, just might, if I have enough product left, repaint the trunk lid. It was the first thing I painted and it's got some tiger stripes, done before I got some pointers on painting metallic from forum members. If I had a larger work space, and a proper paint booth it would have been a bit nicer. This is the fourth paint job that has been on this car since I've owned it. In order ... starting with the original paint. Next: Lincoln Continental metallic green and gold (Ditlzer I think) Next: Brown metallic Imron Next: ETA two months

That's the OEM Verdoro Green ... or at least it's supposed to be
The paint in the first posts should be the same green as in the photo with me standing next to it graduation day. Or course at that point it was eight years old and not very shiny.

It's really nice that you kept the car all of these years. As much as I worked to get mine back on the road I still don't like it as much as my first one from 1982. Mayfair Maize hardtop with black interior.

Thought I'd post a late night shop photo of the car. Nothing prepped for the photo, dusty, tools lying around, just snapped it before I came up for the night.
In case anyone thought the car didn't exist and I was just here because I have no social life .... well, that's true, but the car does exist Up on jack stands at the moment to fit the sheet metal.

Looks nice. Me personally, I’d rather see a car painted by the owner (even if it has imperfections) than one that was done at a body shop.

You'd soon change your mind on that if it were a common occurrence. Guys also need to recognise when their ability doesn't match the money and effort put into a car that deserves much more than an excellent backyard job, perhaps even a crappy professional job.

Hey, while I've got your attention .... I'm thinking about leaving off the fender well trim, these cars look so clean without it ... but that idea is struggling with my desire to make it look original. What do you guys think?

The paint is looking nice!
IMO leaving the fender trim makes cars look unfinished. You've paid attention to so many of the little details on your resto, I'd polish it up and put it on.

As long as it's straight and bright, I would use it. That's just me though... With a few exceptions, I don't like painted rear bumpers or leaving the rocker and wheel opening trim off these cars.

That's enough for me ... it will be installed.
And yeah, it does give it kind of an unfinished look when they aren't there.
