Default help with 1970 GP air cleaner;

I had hoped to make a single post in the lobby to ask a couple air cleaner questions applicable over several model lines, and model years, but OPH probably nailed it.

Question:

Can someone please confirm that the 1970 GP air cleaner is the same one used on the Lemans/GTO?
(EG: not the dropped base air cleaner used on 1970 Firebird)

---

Here are some pictures of the air cleaner base in question.

Here is a picture comparing this to a known (dropped base, c/w original date stamp) 1970 Firebird air cleaner:

Here is a picture with the Firebird air cleaner set on top of it;
The air cleaners have had the breather tube hole and passenger side snorkels aligned:

I showed the snorkels because I have understood that the 1969 GTO air cleaner (not used on the GP) had a wider spread of the snorkels than what was used on the 1970+ air cleaners.

I have also read that there were several small variances in the angles between the snorkels for 1970-1972 air cleaners, but wanted to make known that this air cleaner was not spread wider than the 1970 Firebird Formula 400 air cleaner.

Above dual snorkel aircleaner is '70 GTO- 455 GP and 70 B series 455 w 64 heads.
A shown above, without CA emissions vent provision. By late in the '70 model year, this style aircleaner base had the small round hole in it to mate with the propper CA emission Qjet. on 49 state builds this small plastic plug remained in the hole. Fremont assembly workers were to remove the small plug if CA emissions Qjet was used.

For '71 Pontiac 400 4bbl & 455 Dport A-body's & 455 GPs, the same dimensional & appearance dual snorkel aircleaner was used (always has the small hole for the airhorn vent). Did use a different part number than the '70 application air cleaners.

what is the device mounted on the inner part of the air cleaner( where the filter would sit) called and what is its function. Are replacements available for it, and is it needed in this day and age?

Other info worth mentioning is that the dual snorkel was only used on 455’s in 70-72 GP’s and they had painted lids (as opposed to the chrome lid on the 70 GTO). 400 GP’s used a black short single snorkel air cleaner like that on small valve 70 455 big cars.

69 400 GP’s used a black long skinny snorkel air cleaner and both 428’s (370 and HO 390) used a chrome lid large single snorkel unit (same as 68 GTO, 68-69 big car 428 HO and 68-69 Firebird 400).
