Thanks for the response, but actually there is a difference. The A body tanks will bolt in, but they don't hold the same capacity as original GP tanks. I'm looking for a factory GP tank specifically for the larger capacity.

Tank volume
You are correct about tank volume for GP being larger. I had many people tell me they were the same and that the factory literature stating 26 gallon was incorrect. I had to replace my original tank years ago and had to use the GTO replacement 20 gallon tank. I took my original tank and it took 26 gallons to fill with it sitting in the same position as it was on the car .Debate settled…they ARE different. Oh and the filler neck angle and length is slightly different.

I have one out of a 71 GP. I do not know if there are differences.

Just to clarify... '69 & '70 are both 21.5 Gal tanks. '71 & '72 are 26 Gal.
For a '70 built with CA emissions, it has a different tank for EES, but the 49 state tank is the same as '69. Both style '69 & '70 tanks are reproduced, with one vent pipe for '69 & '70 (without EES) and three vent pipes for EES. This is information is right from the Pontiac MPC, unless it's wrong? Still looking? I have a decent tank out of a '69 Gp.

I'm looking for another one for my 72 LeMans GT. Thank you GP freak. Sorry for my delay responding. Been offline for a time. Can you confirm if your tank has the 3 vents for EES and if it's the larger capacity? The filler neck will be much shorter than the 21 gallon tank from the A-bodies (as compared), and it will be a physically larger tank, nearly square in dimension. PM me if so. Thank you.

Side by side photos. Stock 72 A-body vs. 70 G-Body. Quite different.
Notice both tanks have the three vents for EES. This is what I'm looking for. Thanks Gents!

I'm curious, are you still able to access the factory rear strap anchors in the trunk floor when installing these deeper tanks into an A-Body car? |

Once the tank was in the A-body, I had to make mounting provisions for the longer straps by cutting into the cross brace tunnel at the back of the trunk, behind the bumper. The straps kind of land in a 'natural spot,' so it was easy to figure out how to notch and re-anchor the longer straps. Been holding up solidly for thousands of miles now. Nice to have the extra capacity.

Obviously the larger tanks were made with those dimples to fit over the existing rear strap anchors rather than requiring redesigned trunk floor braces.
One thing I noticed in the Pontiac MPC is that there's no capacity shown with the '70 EES tank part number. Perhaps it was those cars that only received the 26 gal tanks? I know the '70 GP pictured above with the larger tank was equipped with CA emissions so that fits. That pretty much sounds like how the '71-'72 GP straps mount. For sure, nice to have those extra gallons in the tank. |

Pretty sure my tank is the smaller one without the vents. I did have a '70 from California that had that larger tank with the dimples, it developed leaks in those spots so keep an eye on it.
