Has anyone put the new 5spd TKX Tremec in their Poncho yet?
I guess it has been out a bit over a year now. Was wanting to know if anyone has put on in a 70-81 Bird? Mine is a 4speed and I really do not like it. thinking of the 5 spd swap

Wow that may not be a super tough swap if you have a lift, but it would be a bear without one.

If you don’t have a trans Jack it is still hard with a lift!Tom

Which is like saying I have a stationary lift . It's just semantics if you have a pit then you have the same ability to get under the car while standing to do the work vs laying on your back on the driveway. My point is that this swap done on your back with the car one foot off the ground on jack stands would be significantly more difficult, not that it cannot be done that way just far more difficult. I have done tons of repairs under a car laying on the driveway too, but that was much easier to do when I was 20 or 30 and even 40. Now at 60 I may not have the same desire for that type of experience, especially given the weight of that TKX tranny. |

I bought a Harbor Freight trans jack($140 with 20% off coupon)for just this purpose. No telling how many times I'll be able to use it, 3 so far, before it dies.

wooden blocks. Put the engine, clutch and trans in at once. He bought the factory looking shifter handle and its fits dead on in the factory "porch" on the tunnel. There is, however, like 1/4" clearance in a couple spots near the toploader edges but it does NOT touch. Silversport made him a driveshaft and we used the silversport Cross member, factory bellhousing, M22 clutch disc and 11 inch clutch. Best to get one made to fit the second gen F body. . I think he was at $ 3,600 for the kit with cross, Drive shaft, shifter handle and stock looking trans mount.

Following this thread now. I am pulling the RA III out of my '70 TA and going with a 455 stroker engine, and have been toying with the idea of putting in one of these 5-speeds in place of the Muncie, esp. since I have the 3.73 rear and the car is just not a lot of fun cruising down the highway.

racerboy...Do it, you'll never regret it. 3.73 x .68 gives you a 2.536 rear gear. Your 455 will love that almost as much as your wallet.

I actually filled out the SilverSport form today a little while ago just to get some numbers on the package for my ‘70 TA.

I just put one in my 72 Lemans. I had to cut the tunnel a little. I wish I knew about the Silver sport 1st as they modify the tail housing and shifter to fit without cutting. Now I am looking for a shifter boot 6.25x 6.25. So I can cover the hole.

The TKX quote I received from silver sport was around $5900. That was with a reproduction bellhousing and not the SFI QuickTime deal. There were some things I could probably skip but it was a very complete quote.

In the car in your signature picture? If yes are you running the hydraulic bearing or manual linkage? How are you liking it?
