Default New Member First Build

Hello all, My name is Jon and I am a new member here. Just about finished my first Pontiac engine build as well as a complete rebuild of my 1965 drag car. I got the car from my father who has owned it since 1993. Dad was never able to finish the buid and then he lost interest in the car as he grew older. He now has a well build 68 GTO he is playing with. As far as my car goes, its got a great past story but for me it started with a budget build I did with it back in 2016 because I couldn't see the car not get finished so thats why I took on the project. Its a 1965 LeMans that I have now turned into a GTO clone. Car had 35 cans of satin white spray and 5 cans of plasti dip for the simulated vinyl top. It was powered by a 366ci N?A carbed LS engine before w/TH400 and ran 10.4@125 all motor. It was alot of fun but I wanted to make it PURE again. So I stripped it all down and started all over again. Built my first Poncho powerplant with help from my old man as well as Jeff Kauffman and some other local Pontiac enthusiasts. Details below of build..

Engine: 1968 YC 400 Block now 461ci, Drilled for Kauffman Billet 4 bolt mains w/studs, 3/4 filled, Kauffman bore brace, Ohio Forged 4.250 stroke Crank, Eagle Forged 6.800 rods, Icon Forged flat top pistons 4.155, Edelbrock Round Port 64cc 330CFM heads w/studs & cometic gaskets, Lunati Solid Roller 282/282 .404/.404 lobe lift 104IC Crower 1.65's w/stud girdle, Port matched Victor 4150 intake, ProSystems 1000cfm carb, MSD Crank Trigger, 13.7:1 compression, X16 fuel. Hoping for 650+ @ 6800

Trans: Dynamic Racing Built TH400 W/Brake, 4800 stall converter.

Rear: Build 12 bolt 4.11 pro gears, girdle, strange spool 33 spline.

Car: Gutted 1965 LeMans 3050lbs, glass hood and lexan side windows, Mayfair Maize W/ Vinyl top. Drag Car ONLY due to being cut up. Could be put back to a street car with some work.

With that cid, compression and pro port heads if you can not top 650 Hp then something is way wrong!

Sounds like a great build. That engine might make 700 HP. What is the rear suspension? Is it tubbed? What size rear tires?

Tim, it is a stock 4 link suspension rear. UMI tubular adjustable rod end arms, 6cyl springs 1/2 coil cut, Calvert adj shocks. 30x9x15 15x8.5 4.75BS inner tubs are modified and lip on quarter is cut back too.

It sits at 90% anti-squat currently and is 42" forward of the rear. Give or take under my seat is where its crossing. flat bottom bar and 7* down on the uppers with the radial slicks. With Drag Radials and No-Hop bars I have 130% anti-squat. See photo in prior post for drag radial seperation. Radials need a very hard plant to work good. Footbrake this car went 1.38 with a 500hp LS

Nicely done.

You don't often see the information presented in that way.

I have to say I am very impressed with the car and your new engine build. The best part is you put an Pontiac back in your Pontiac. Please post back any dyno numbers and/or time slips. Great job.

Nice, its going to make 650+
I think its more like 12.5-1 or so compression ratio from the number given.
Not wild about the cam, still should run great.
Sweet ride and getting a LS out of a old Pontiac is heroic IMO.

Dragncar here is my setup for compression. The cam is a older grind that I believe made it through a few hands but came from Tim Corcoran who is on this post as well. Was for a Super Stock 455 combination from what I know. The engine did go on the dyno at Len Caverly's shop in Barrington, New Hampshire. Unfortunatley we had to abort mission due to the oil pump had a stuck check ball after one of the pulls. We ran it to 5250 and it made good power at the cross over point 580hp / 530lb ft. It was climbing quick. Len thinks it should make 650+ but will need to spin to 7K or more.

In your CR calculation you have the piston relief volume as -0.005 cc which infers you have a small dome. I think Icon flat top pistons have a 5.5 cc valve relief or a 5.5 cc effective dome volume as listed in your CR calculator.

You are right, my mistake. I forgot that these are 4.3cc flats. So that puts me at like 13.0

I don't know if that is a typeo or not. But @ 5250 580 HP is 580 torque.

Do you have a dyno sheet you can post?

Stan

Typo, thanks for noticing. 530/530 @ 5250 @ 5600 it was 580hp and thats the highest we ran it up to. We had just finished some break-in time and this was the first hard pull. Then i had a oil pressure drop at idle so we stopped.

580 HP @ 5600 is 544 torque. Was torque still raises when you stopped the pull?
