Anyone know of any websites where I can get a basic understanding of pontiac rearends? I want to be able to identify mine.
I have a 78 T/A and all I know about the axles is that I was told it had 4:11 gears. (feels right and tach confirms ) The axle has been cut and rewelded on both sides but I don't know if it was a performance mod or repair. (the car used to be street raced)
Any help for me?

2 PZ
2 PY
2 PX
2 PW
2 PU
2 PT
2 PS

Notice the pattern here.

Only problem is many of us builders have been gutting these rearends for decades, & in many cases, often build off of who knows what coded housing. Moral...used, you never know what you got till you pull the cover

2 PZ= '77 1/2-79 (Z-28 w 4 spd) 3.73 posi

2 PY= '78-79-80 (used in '78 4spd T/A) 3.42 posi

2 PX= 77-78-79 TransAm usage (used in '78 W72 auto T/A) 3.23 posi

All '71-81 F-bodies came with 8.5 corporate 10 bolts. It maybe possible your's has had it's ends trimmed for c-clip elims.

yea, OPH knows the rear axles quite well.

I assume you have a 10-bolt cover.

gear ratio:
Rotate tires once and count the driveshaft rotation...4 times and a tad more. Both tires off the ground and rotated like a locked posi.

or pull the cover and read the pionion face or ringgear side for 41:10 or some other number ratio...then run that into a calculator.

Thanks for the reponse guys,

I regret I don't know exactly what the code is or where to find it, but I'll try and find it this weekend. It is a 10 bolt tho... And on both sides about 4 inchs past the housing it has been cut and a smaller axle housing has been welded on. The reason for this I do not know. I don't even know what a c clip is. <blush> .
Perhaps this weekend I can get under it and take a better look.

Thanks guys, I know it takes nerve to answer one so obviously ignorant. But I do appreciate it greatly.
