My '63 Star Chief has a fuel leak from the sending unit area of the tank when you fill it up more than half-full. I have looked around a few places and cannot find how the sender is sealed to the tank, is it an O-ring? If so, where can I get one or what I need to fix this?

I changed my sending unit last year when I restored my gas tank, and it came with the gasket you are asking about. There is a rubber gasket, or O-ring, that goes between the sending unit where it bolts to the hole in the gas tank and the tank itself. I'm not sure where you could buy just the gasket, but have you tried our host, Performance Years? I would also try Ames, Original Parts Group, and search on Ebay. Good luck in your search.

I had searched PY and Ames, to no luck. But I did not know OPG sold parts for us.

OPGI does have a catalog for the '63 and '64 Grand Prix, which would have many of the same parts for your Star Chief. The gasket does not look correct to me in the link you included. I'm not an expert, but that gasket looks more like the typical gasket for a 60's Chevy, like a Camaro or Chevelle. My gas tank (I have a '64 Grand Prix) I assume would be the same as your '63 Star Chief, and it used a sending unit with several small bolts that fasten it to the hole in the top of the gas tank. It also used a thin rubber gasket that has several holes that match the bolt pattern on the sending unit that is sandwiched between the sending unit and the tank.

I found a sending unit on Ebay for you that has pictures of what I am talking about. I wasn't able to find just a gasket on Ebay, but you may want to search yourself. At least this one will show you a picture of what I am talking about. Here's the link:

Great thanks, i pulled that link out of their full size catalog. I will need to crawl under the car and check it out and go from there, but feel confident that one or the other should get me fixed up. Thanks for your help. I will update with my findings.

Unfortunately Id prefer this to be a remove and replace type of deal, I wont have the ability to chase parts once I get it apart.

I have the filler neck O ring if you need it.

It takes a gasket not an O ring. Sending unit is held in with screws not a lock ring. Look at the diagram 8lug posted.

My 62 cat takes a gasket, just like in the diagram above. I replaced it last week. Got the gasket from Ames, works like a charm. Easy fix. Bill

chased a small leak on my Lemans for two weeks. Ultimately I found that the outlet pipe had come loose from the mounting plate allowing fuel to get out around the pipe. If you are able to wiggle the outlet pipe, that may be your problem...

not that napa wouldnt have it, but most west marine/boat stores carry that gasket as well...its a pretty common issue for boat tanks =)
