trans crossmember
I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a difference in trans crossmembers in our x-body venturas, over a nova? I got a nova trans crossmember for a 350/4 speed and it seems to be too tall. By almost 7/8 an inch. I can't even get the trans mount in the trans will hit the floor. Wonder if I should get one for a 67-69 firebird?

I have one for a 350 at home, but the Nova one (providing it's year correct) should work too

I was told the crossmember I got would work on my car, But when I had it mocked up on the subframe with my 4107 headers the right header hit the trans crossmember. Now that the subframe is in the car I can't even get the mount in there. I don't have the old crossmember as the guy before me put an olds motor in it with a 400 and a 400 crossmember in it. I saw a 67-69 firebird crossmember on e-bay but it looks same as mine. I have 2 different 350 trans mounts and both are still too tall? Might have to get a mount made if I can't figure it out.

Can you post some pics of the crossmembers you have? I've been building X-bodies for a long time and have never had any probs with any of mine. mike

Thanks I will put some up this weekend. The onlt thing I can imagine is the crossmember may be made wrong (made in china?) I looked at a 68 camaro 350/350 and the trans mount and crossmember look alike. but I was on a creeper. I have a guy who lives at the next farm over that has a 69 camaro I think is a 4speed not sure. But he has it over a pit so I may ask him if I can go over with a tape mesure? Can't hurt at this point.

I do have this cross member here if you need it. The turbo 400 and the 350 are definately different.

Thanks I did buy a 68-74 nova 350 cross member, and I was told its for my car but? I will put some pics up soon. The only thing I can think is the cross member is made wrong? If so I will want yours.

put up some pics
I put up some pics. of all that seems to give a good description of what I'm up against. just go to my profile and look in my album. I had to modify the shifter mount. I think going to a 119-4204 would help as it is mounted to the side and not in that L position. Still even without that shifter mount it rides too high. I had to really jam that trans mount in there with that one photo. You can see the right side header is touching the cross member. The engine has new mounts also. hope someone sees my problem! Thanks.

It appears in pic 3 and 9 that the mount your using isn't the same. It looks too thick in pic 9. Is it just the pic? You might have the wring trans mount, it need to be thinner.

Sorry I have 2 mounts one is slightly thicker and that is the one it calls for! I was able to stuff the thinner one in but is still tight. I had to loosen the header just to get that mount in. I am going to go to advanced auto with both mounts Tomorrow and compare all mounts, as they have one in stock for a 74 ventura. I also have to get a 350 driveshaft yoke as the guy who put the 400 in changed that. I have to figure if the 5 1/2 inch yoke is what I need. I think that was the most common.

I think you need the thinnest one possible,it will helplower the read of the motor and help with the header clearance issue. mine is also very tight on the passenger side as well. Good Luck

Well just got back from advanced auto and there mount is even taller than my tallest! I guess I have to find a cross member to match mine to it. If not I guess I will modify the cross member. Ahhh the fun of a simple straight forward rebuild!

I still have the correct mount here. Not sure how much they are on PY, but mine will be cheap. Let me know if you want to try it, maybe just pay the shipping, if it doesn't work, send it back.

Thanks I will put up a new pic tonight let me know if it looks any better, since I removed that shifter mount. I know you said the right side is tight. If it still looks too tight I will take you up on your cross member. Thanks Tom
