A little damage...
Detonation makes for ugliness.

I see your blower is for sale.
Is this the end of this streamliner engine project or simply a revision ? Boy that head sure looks terminal.

Very sorry to see this.
Wow, look at the cracks even around the head bolts! That head was lifting off the block a crazy amount. That can likely be fixed, but at what cost, it would be monumental if you can’t do it yourself I would think. How does the crank and the rod bearings look? The bearings must be badly hammered? How long has this head been in use?

Better to have built a one of a kind awesome engine and blown it up than to have run a cookie cutter boring one.
Interesting to see the thickness of the casting. Sorry to see it blown up like that. If I still had spare heads I’d give you one to replace it but you know I sold them. I hope you still have some ideas for another project. Rob Maybe you could cut the head in half and built a two cylinder Hemi………..😎

I have seen some worse than that repaired. It's a setback and opportunity for upgrade. The only positive statement I can make.

Ouch, that's a big chunk gone.
Care to go into some details you think might've caused that? Someone said blower, what boost psi, fuel, AFR, timing etc? Curious what they would charge to repair vs buying a new head that you 100% can guarantee to beat on again and right away.

Bingo! Looking at the breakage- how fragile that old casting was- I regret starting the project with it. A billet would be the way to go.
I've decided to build the engine as a 91 c.i. two-cylinder (#1 & #4) and drop down to H/BFL class. That will only require some crude TIG welding to close up the water jacket in #2.

Well... that was just wishful thinking! Magnafluxing the Moldex custom billet crank shows a couple small cracks. So it needs to go back to Moldex for welding and straightening. Also found some cracks in the aluminum block's water jacket which need TIG welding.

No, methanol. I don't know for sure what caused the detonation. I originally had blamed myself for possibly not fully opening the fuel shutoff valve before the run, since the air/fuel log showed about 12:1 instead of the desired 5.x:1. But the other three cylinders don't show any signs of lean running and- only #2 had an oxygen sensor. Hmm... perhaps something was amiss with the #2 port nozzle or hose or J-block?
