Default Blackhawk down in North Alabama

our Pastor told us his daughter can see the smoke from her house. Traffic tied up too.
All dead, but here are some questions;
How many on board? So far only reporting 2.
What caused it to go down?
Whose is it? Here's a statement: Redstone Arsenal has stated "it isn't one of ours".

On the news they said it was a National Guard helicopter.
No other details at that time.

Yea, news info stated it was a TN NG training run. Video show it dropping, freefall straight down like a rock.

I think the only thing that will cause a chopper to fall like that is a total failure of the rotor/gearbox ... even just freewheeling it would not have dropped like that. Makes me think either the gearbox locked up or they somehow lost one of the blades.

Maybe the "JESUS NUT" came off. That would immediately remove any ability to remain in flight.

Many people have no concept of how easy it is for a helicopter to fall from the sky.

Not making this up

"If the Jesus nut were to fail in flight, the rotor would detach from the helicopter and the only thing left for the crew to do would be to "pray to Jesus." The nut/pin must be checked before the flight even though real examples of the Jesus nut/pin failing are rare."

Well, UH-60 has a differing top-retention approach, that the images below might convey an understanding.

Doesn’t matter. A main transmission failure would accomplish the same thing. If they were low enough, they wouldn’t have had time to perform an autorotation.
