1970-73 TA gas tanks
I was looking at a few original gas tanks that I have, both from '71 Van Nuys cars, and noticed something odd. One tank is from my 71 TA and one is from another '71 bird, may have been a formula. Both tanks are the EEC style with the dual line sender. In the tank from my TA, the filler neck goes into the tank and extends along the top of the tank (attached by a bracket), almost to the sender hole. In the attached picture, you can see the end of the tube through the sender hole. On the other tank (which has a date code of 8/70), the filler neck just goes a few inches into the tank and ends.
Has anyone noticed this on their tanks? Does anyone know what the purpose of this extended filler neck is? Was it a TA specific tank or was it just an early version?

Here is a picture of the filler neck extension tube. My '71 and '73 Trans Ams also have this. Two original 350 - 2bbl base Firebird fuel tanks I looked at did not. The extension tube must have something to do with performance engine options, possibly to prevent fuel from being forced into the filler tube and against the gas cap during hard acceleration.
The reproduction Made in Canada tank has the short filler tube but the top stamping does have the locating dimples for the extension tube support bracket. |

Bruce,
Was the Norwood car with the EEC built in April of 1970? |

Multiple Norwood cars built with California emissions have been documented. During the early years it was common practice for Van Nuys to build cars for the west coast and Norwood for the east coast but that wasn't always the case. Either factory could build 49-state or 50-state emission cars.

I have owned two Norwood cars sold new in CA and equipped with EEC, and I know of three others. Four of those cars were built in April of 70, and I always wondered why. I don't know if there was a problem with Van Nuys keeping up with orders, or if Norwood had an excess of cars, or if there was some other reason. Hence my question....

Has Spectra corrected the location of the filler tube into the tank? They also didn't have the recessed corner like original.
