Interesting discussion!

Do you think that the same firewall was used in other divisions A-bodies? If so do you think Chevy, Buick's, or Olds used the holes to mount different parts? Just asking as it occurred to me when reading this tread.

I'm guessing yes!

Some think the dimples, bumps and holes on GM firewalls are hideous. But to me, they represent history. In many (if not most cases), these warts are worth preserving...including seam sealer and/or tape over the holes. Like the photos of survivors that 428 and others' own cars that they all considerately posted on this thread, Ben's GTO is like a time capsule.

When the time comes, I will be using seam sealer on my Baltimore built '67 unless I find out Baltimore used tape.

You can see the outline where the cloth tape was covering the hole next to the Data Plate.

This ‘66 Survivor KAN 05A was on BaT recently and is a perfect example from an air condition car.
Check out excess seam sealer under the voltage regulator.

It seems many 1967 Tempest Series cars have their switch in a different location.

Here are two 1967 Original Survivors that have the under hood lamp switch located next to the Data Plate as “Longs” ‘67 above shows.

The 67 GTO Assembly Manual points the underhood lamp assembly to use an existing hole and an existing dimple. I can see the cloth tape residue on my 67 LeMans under the lamp. Not sure why the switch is erroneously mounted next to the lamp though. Just noticed that the drawing calls out to cut out the underhood insulation for the switch and lamp assembly.

Just a thought. Could one of those holes be for a manual choke cable? Mine is set up with a manual choke but I've never really looked as to where the cable goes thru the fire wall.

I will share this story from years ago. My friend Tom Foster (RIP) and I were enjoying some barley pops one evening in his garage where he had 2 1970 GTO shells sitting adjacent to each other. Both cars were low option cars without AC, but the firewalls were noticeably different from each other.

One had every possible hole required to install any option available and the other shell only had the necessary holes for the parts installed on the build sheet.
The cars had come from different plants. I remember Tom remarking on how difficult it is to properly restore a car when there are so many differences from the factory.

Is the under hood lamp identified on your PHS documentation (if you have it)? Or could it have been installed by the Dealer after the fact? Or maybe the line workers just did it however they felt like doing it. My under hood insulation is not cut out for the light or the switch, and it is listed on my PHS documentation.

I agree with Longs.

I have several ‘67 Survivors in my files that were built with the underhood lamp/switch that do not have their hood insulation cut out.

Plus my ‘66 Survivor with underhood lamp never had the cut outs.
It’s not needed.

Ben, is this '67 an early build? Perhaps the switch mounting carried over from '66 for a short time?

Build is 11D, fourth week of November. I never got the PHS for the LeMans though I may as I begin a restoration on that car soon.
