Default H pipe? X pipe? ????

Does anyone know or has anyone read of the advantage of an X pipe or H pipe or which is better. Getting ready to build my exhaust and any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

There is good book you can get at the Ind. Center Barnes & Noble: the SA Book "How to Build Max. Performance Pontiac V8s" that has a lot of information related to this and it has the ins and outs and good and bads of both.

Discussion here about the differance:

Another:

Go to Google and type in H pipe vs. X pipe and get more conversations about it.

Also here is a Car Craft article:

My personal experience H pipe and loud 2 chamber flow masters would still pick up 0.2 seconds uncorked. X cross over and Ultraflows, tailpipes ran the same as open headers even with the added weight of the exhaust system and was quieter.

Thanks for all the info guys, I've been meaning to buy the book but haven't been to the bookstore in quite a while. I'm running a mild 400 with RA manifolds and putting 2 1/2" exhaust with flowmasters (unless I find out something is better anyway)

i switched from a "H" to an "X" pipe and did not notice any real performance gain but it was noticeably quiter at part and full throttle, actually had people wanting to know what i did to quiet it down at the track.

Default best exhaust kit

Hi, I was wondering who makes a great kit.I have a 73 t/a, 462,SD ported 6x heads,Xe274 cam with 1.65 roller rockers,alum Ho intake,cliff Rugals carb, Dougs headers.Now it's time for an exhaust system.I'd like to go with a 3 inch system,and an X pipe with a nice sounding GREAT FLOWING muffler.Any suggestions/
thanks

Scott,

Your observations mirror what we have seen here locally. We have also witnessed the back to back dyno tests and we are yet to see a performance gain (with the X-pipe) when the system is adequately sized for the CID/HP of the engine in the first place.

It's not a magic bullet...Robert

Z code... from what i have experienced, ( working with friends on their exhaust ) if the system is sized properly and the bends are not kinked then the performance is minimal at best when switching to a "x" cross over. however it depends what you expect from the "magic bullet". with the cars i have built exhaust for all being "street" race cars the fact that the exhaust was quiter with the "x" was as important as any performance gain and just as important when there was no performance gain.

I ran a 3" exhaust with an X and tail pipes and the car is very quiet. And uncapping the car gained nothing over the full exhaust.
