Default Cummins to pay record-setting $1.675 billion US environmental fine

https://www.reuters.com/business/aut...er-2023-12-22/

WASHINGTON, Dec 22 (Reuters) - Truck engine maker Cummins Inc (CMI.N) has agreed in principle to pay a $1.675 billion fine for installing devices on hundreds of thousands of engines to allow them to emit excess pollution, the largest-ever civil penalty for a Clean Air Act violation, the U.S. Justice Department said on Friday.

A bit of cheddar there.

They never say who gets the money, but I'm betting it's not the "vulnerable communities" who were supposedly wronged.

EPA Administrator Michael Regan said "vulnerable communities are more likely to reside near highways where these harmful emissions are concentrated, making this agreement critical to advancing our environmental justice agenda."

It's similar to the class action suit notices that I occasionally get. Reading the fine print, the lawyers get millions and the wronged folks like me each get something like $25.

A couple of years ago I signed onto a class action against Capital One for their big data breach. Initially the expected payout was like $70. Settlement was 91 million ... evidently not a lot of people joined in ... three weeks ago I got a check for $707 .... for something I had totally forgotten about.

And yes I'm vulnerable At least I pretend to be when the wife yells at me.
