Default Oil Filter choice

I’ve been runnning wix 51258 black filter ……car has headers Hedman 28150 and I can get the filter in with a little bit of persuasion ….
What are some of the other filter options I know baldwin b39 and Napa gold 1258 is another ….looking for something smaller than the 51258 if possible …but still have a good filtering system….open to suggestions.recommendations…thanks

Not sure of the size compared to 5128, but I have been using the mobil filters that are rated to 10k miles and have a synthetic media, they are normally $10ea or more, I bought a bunch of them on clearance from rock auto for $4ea a couple years ago. They fit great on my 28150 header 78 TA 400 as well as big 2" O-port supercomp headers with E-heads in a 72 firebird. They cost more but supposed to be an excellent filter.

Purolator 25288, comes in 3 levels of protection. Purolator boss PBL25288 in one of the best filters out there.

amazon has dimensions so can compare to the wix, it might be a tad smaller or the same, but it fits fine on my header cars.

Another tip some dont know or use when changing filters to keep things clean is to let the engine cool so its not super hot, then slip a ziploc bag over the filter, it will catch any oil that leaks out when undoing and when tilting it to clear the headers.

The WIX 51045 is a shorter filter that many use with header clearance issues.

You could try the "Jim Hand mod" to your existing oil filter adapter.

Yeah I've seen that don't think that has to be done like I said a little persuasion it's not that bad but if I could find a smaller filter to try I will...

Is the B31 shorter than the Wix 51045? Where do you find the dimensions?

I would stay with the Wix 51258 filter. It's an excellent filter. If you can get the filter installed with just a bit of persuasion, that's Hugh. I run the same oil filter but I have to remove my oil filter housing to change the filter. No biggie to do on the lift. The Baldwin is also a very good filter. I would say better than Wix. I'm not a fan of those 3" round filters. GM is now running them now on the 6.6 liter Duramax diesel engines, so it must be an OK filter. The only thing with these oil filters is making sure they do not sit too close to the headers.

The purolator 25288 Boss is a superior filter to most you buy. Use one then cut it open, you’ll see. I have Doug’s round port headers. It goes right in

i like the hp-2006 from k&n. stupid expensive, but that nut on the bottom makes life way easier doing an oil change with headers in the way.

Wix is now owned by Mann + Hummel. Wix is not the company it used to be before the take-over. Stuff is getting offshored to cut costs and boost profits. Not everything...yet.

Purolator is also owned by Mann + Hummel. I have no idea how much production capacity or techniques they share. Maybe they're the same filter with different packaging and different paint...or maybe there's a real difference between them.

Wix filters on sale here. 51258. $6.45 each. That's like around $4.68 U.S. I bough a case. I think regular is around $11 a filter.
