Default 64 vert rear seat (back rest) bracket location?

for 12 yrs this damn rear seat has been bothering me. took the backrest out and the 2 outboard brackets are off by more than 3/8" from the factory.

so i put a straight edge across all three brackets and it seems like the middle is off too.

anyone know the correct location of these babies? hoping i don't have to drill and reweld any. like to be able to notch them a bit and make things level again.

thks

Car not here to measure, but yours look a lot like mine. See my pic before paintwork.

What is your issue?

I had no issues with my seat back prior to disassembly.

I have the back here and hasn't been reupholstered yet so if you need to compare notes on it I can do it.

Can the cross bars of the seat frame be tweaked to compensate for this misalignment?

If I moved a ton of crap I could maybe get inside my 64 Vert and see how the tabs line up. The back set is not in the car.

Default rear seat

the problem is that the rear seat is high on one side vs. other. its been driving me nuts since i've owned the car.

yeah i could do it trial and error... but thought someone would have the measurements.

Plan on being in the garage the next couple of days. If I get really bored (with what I am doing) maybe I can move a lot of stuff and get in the car and take a pic and measurements with my phone.

here are some pics and measurements... after putting the level on them, i am thinking that the passenger side and center are correct (since they are level) and drivers side is low.
drivers 2"
center 2 3/4"
passenger 2 1/4"

1) passenger to center
2) center to driver

I think the level of the car is screwing you up a bit.

You need to find a common point on each side of the seat back where the distances are the same to for example (the floor hump or a location on the sides of the car) and make those two locations your plumb line. Then measure the difference in the clip heights vs the plumb line. Rarely does any GTO sit perfectly level. My rough eyeball says the clip on the right (drivers side) is low.

Tom that is my conclusion too. Driver side low.

Yeah disreguard the level stuff... but it agrees with measurement. Drivers side is low.

If I read your tape correctly the pass side measures 2, center 2 3/4, and dr 2 1/4. So the two outside brackets are not the same. So one side is ether high or low in relation to the other. But the center is low in relation to both sides. Measure the contact point on the seat frame at all three points and see if you can determine which bracket is high or low. If the pass side is really high then grind the bottom of the U to match the other side. Or add some spacer to the low side to get the seat back to drop down to the needed height. As the center seems low anyway it should not care where the two sides sit.

Ok I measured my car, here are the dimensions from the seal bend at the top of the firewall seat back:

LEFT SIDE IS EXACTLY 2" FROM THE SEAM EDGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE GROOVE.

MIDDLE IS EXACTLY 3-1/8" FROM THE SEAM EDGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE GROOVE.

RIGHT SIDE SIDE IS EXACTLY 2" FROM THE SEAM EDGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE GROOVE.

In each case I am looking at the seat back so left Side is the passenger side of car and right side is the Driver's side of car.

So your left mount is right on the money, the right mount is 1/4" too low, and the center bracket is 3/8" TOO HIGH, NOT TOO LOW.

LEFT AND RIGHT WOULD PROBABLY WORK AS IS, CENTER NEEDS TO BE LOWERED TO 3-1/8"

I did one final test and that was to string a "Bob Line" across the 3 grooves.
The middle groove is 1/16" lower vs the other two grooves at the bottom of their slots.

So all three are basically horizontal to each other. Doubt if the machine fixture could get closer than a 1/16" on set-up. Glad I could help you.

I would assume the way a 64 and 65 convertible rear seat back mounts is the same, although I have never really checked. Do you have the screws in the upper corners of the seat backs that go through the metal tabs of the upholstered top cylinder covers? Had the rear seat out of my 65 convertible and forgot to put the screws back in. My seat was not level until I put the screws back in...

thks for all the help! finally finished this little job up.

after notching 1/2" passenger side and 9/16" middle, everything sits nice and level now!

just had to drill a new hole behind the armrest for the passenger side since it is sitting lower now. all good.

cheers
