Thanks all fellow veterans and those who said thanks.
I cannot believe the sourdough bread thread has more comments then this thread. I was out and about this weekend and saw a lot of fellow vets wearing various armed forces hats or shirts. I spoke with a few and they mentioned that they have had very few people thank them for their service over the weekend. I had a shirt on with large letters that said ARMY on it. I went to Old Chicago and asked the waiter what the Veterans Day special was. He acted like I was making him do backflips or something. He grabbed the paper menu put it on the table and walked away.

There are the same number of posts in both discussions. Your waiter at Old Chicago must not have known the restaurant policy, they did offer a complimentary lunch to veterans on Nov. 11. https://www.military.com/discounts/o...itary-discount

My wife is an Air Force veteran. Her years of service happened to be in a window of peace time for the US, she did not see combat duty. But she did several overseas deployments, and has all positive things to say about her service. On Veterans day, Red Robin, a slightly upscale hamburger chain had a Veterans special. A gourmet burger and fries free. We decided to go. Probably 25-30% of the customers were Veterans. The wait staff were all very nice and the she did enjoy a good meal. Several people thanked her for her service as well. It was very nice.

Yeah what was I thinking asking for a Veterans Day menu on Veterans day weekend, I was so rude asking for that.
I like many veterans do not need to be thanked every time it is mentioned that I/they served our Country , although it is appreciated. On Veterans Day you are darn right active and vets should be thanked and often especially those who served in combat. Combat Vets are owed a debt that the USA cannot ever pay back but every possible effort should be made to try.
P.S. I prefer sourdough bread on my patty melts or tuna melts

My service was as beneficial to me as it was to the F105 pilots I helped train.

We did our usual Applebee’s free veterans dinner and we find we have to go earlier every year to beat the crowd here in Florida. Shortly before we were ready to depart the restaurant, I saw a guy and his wife get up from their table and he had a WWII veteran hat on. I was impressed because you don’t often see them anymore. He and his wife moved slowly as you would expect and we caught up to them in the parking lot. I congratulated him on being a surviving WWII vet. Then we were even more surprised as they got into their car. It was the later style Chevrolet Camaro convertible. I said “Wow, and you even drive a sporty car”. His reply was “Yes, I’m 98 years old and this is supposed to be my coffin”. Our interaction with a WWII vet who still seems full of life made our day.

Great post!

The hat I wore to work on Saturday and the picture I took that afternoon.

I salute all who served before, with, and after me.
