GM lifter part numbers suitable for Ponchos
So I've got an NOS set of GM 5232750 lifters, original part number for a 68 (all V8s) is 5232265.
Question one ... are the NOS lifters I have suitable for use in a 68 engine ... Question two ... is there a list of GM lifter part numbers that will work in various year Pontiacs? I can look at the 0.459 group and see all the various PNs for lifters that Pontiac used ... but not sure which ones would be suitable for a 68. Thanks,

The standard 1956 to 79 high ball lifter was 5232265.
I don’t think that number ending in 750 is a Pontiac lifter even though it might be .842” .

The GM 5232750 was used on later model Pontiacs ..
5232750 0.459 All X/260 N.L. LIFTER (std.) 16 1975 1975 0-27 5232750 0.459 ALL (260) .................. LIFTER, VLV (STD) 16 1976 1978 0-50 5232750 0.459 A, B (260F) ................. LIFTER, VLV (STD) 16 1981 1981 0-51 5232750 0.459 B (307) .................... LIFTER, VLV (STD) 16 1981 1981 0-51 It seems like the 5232265 are pretty much all gone these days. I did see one set for sale for $700.

5232265 is a Pontiac V8 lifter.
5232750 is an Olds lifter, some later Pontiac models used Olds engines. |

I guess the next question is ... will they work for a Pontiac V8. They appear almost identical to other Pontiac lifters I have.

Here is a photo ... from left to right ... hylift Johnson, melling, GM 5232750
When I mic'ed them all the GM piece was by far the best, with the Melling running a close second. Note the pronounced chamfer on the GM lifter. Very likely that Melling was the original supplier of the GM part.

Perhaps I'm wrong. I don't think Melling "makes" lifters. They sell lifters purchased in bulk and re-boxed.
I expected the Genuine GM lifter to have the hardened "foot" that the Melling has. My "best guess" is that Melling has left-over GM-sourced lifters, GM ran out and has gone to an outside supplier. But I've been wrong before. Was there another supplier that uses the hardened lifter bottom? Thousands of years ago, Lunati was selling the same lifter for both Olds and Pontiac. Even though the 80s TRW was selling there VL49 lifter for both Olds and Pontiac.

I'm not sure Melling makes lifters NOW, but I thought they did back when they were the OEM supplier to GM for camshafts, oil pumps etc.
I don't think I've ever seen an NOS 60s-70s GM lifter with the hardened foot, however many current replacement lifters for those years do have a hardened foot. At present my engine has a Melling cam (067) and lifters, the very one seen in that photo. First configuration was Melling cam and HyLift Johnson lifters ... had a couple of no-spinners and a couple lazy ones which ended that. So far seems happy with the Melling/Melling combo ... but still wondering how suitable these GM 5232750 are for future use in a Pontiac engine.
