Default Air Dome

I think maybe it has something to do with Air Condition cars?

Yes, A/C cars used the air dome.

Thumbs up AIR DOME FUNCTION

The air dome aids in preventing the fuel pressure from "hammering" when the carb float closes. Just like the ones in house plumbing !

The Air Dome looks kind of like a small CO2 cartridge. It helps to maintain fuel pressure and is only used on the integral fuel pump (glass bowl) type. It stands straight up next to the outlet valve, pumping gas to the carburetor.

The 6550 fuel pump was used into early 65 production and in a prior post discussion was replaced with the sealed style pump. The 6550 is easily rebuildable but the sealed unit is tougher to do with only one fello I know that has the dies and forming tools. Expensive also. Valuable pump as the 6550 are getting harder to find.
The air dome was found on several units including 58-64 P/8 with a/c and 61-64 T/8 with a/c. They are intended to prevent the surge or flat spot caused when the fuel pump transitions from non pumping to pumping. Can these be used on non a/c cars? Yes and sometimes were used to cure the transition flat spot on non a/c cars. I talked to a dealer in Arizona and he confirmed that the hot temps put extra loads on the fuel system and they installed a bunch of air domes. Later pump designs eliminated the need for an additional air pocket and have one built in.

There is a man here in good ole sou. Illinois who has been an Airtex fuel pump engineer for more than 50 years. STILL HAS MANY PATENTS. He is able to rebuild the sealed pumps pretty cheap.
The air dome or accumulator is for AC cars and goes on the inlet side of the pump, as in the illustration in my '66 MPC page C 447 item 25 gr 3.900. "Bill"!

rare4k get ahold of Mike Casella at Then and Now Automotive for your rebuild. 781-335-8860. Great price on either rebuilding or will sell you a kit. Don`t forget to ask for new screws. The diaphrams are ok with ethanol. Your on your own for recolor. I have new in the box examples and some are the bright gold coating and some not so colored. Some have a rainbow. So correct is something I don`t think anyone has a handle on yet. I experimented with Eastwood renew and if you dont get carried away with it (most people do), and introduce some silver, gold lightly, and you have a fair match. 4 coats of flat clear should protect the paint.

the last time I saw that was on a '59 Cadillac that had all kind of options including Tri-Power,..I had to tune it up for a customer,he said the car drove flat and hesitated,.I put a gauge on the fuel line and only got 2lbs pressure, changed fuel pump and all was good,..did research on that pump(could not noway find another like it)and found out that the side canister(air dome as its being called) was for preventing vapor-lock
