1969 Firebird Trans Am TACH & SPEEDO option
I am curious to know if the factory optional gauge pods of a tachometer and speedometer (as seen usually ordered in most 1969 Trans Ams with then the stacked gauges) was an available option for standard V8 Firebirds.
I know the 6 cylinder sprint 1969 Firebird cars could get the tach/speedo cluster with stacked gauges as an option, but were 350 and 400 Birds ever built with that being an option? And if so, was this in-dash tach option limited only 400 cars, Ram Air cars? etc and how rare would it be? Thanks. |

I have stacked gauges and an in-dash tach in my ram air 69 Firebird.

tach option
Cool.
Does anyone know if a regular 350 or standard 400 V8 1969 Firebird could get this option? |

Option code U30 could be ordered on any version of the firebird.
The inline six cylinder and V8s had a different red lines but were otherwise the same setup.

Here's a rundown of all the various 1969 Firebird gauge packages. Always a lot of confusion about these gauge options.

My first car I bought when I was 15 (1979) was a 69 firebird 350 2 bbl 3 speed manual with stack gauges. The car was all original when I bought it but I haven't done a PHS on it so I'm not 100 percent sure if it's original. Maybe I'll do a phs soon. I have owned 5 69 trans ams and only 1 came factory with stack gauges.

Mike if you add in the Safeguard speedo into the mix your 7 possible choices become 11 (SG without hood tach or clock, SG with clock, SG with hood tach, SG with clock and hoodtach)! Then add the two possible tach versions (6cyl versus 8 cyl) and you have 6 more possible combinations. So 17 possible gauge combinations on just one model. And you wonder why every second or third car got built with an option error compared to the dealer order?!?!

I recently sold a set of stacked gauges that came out of 69 350 2bbl with a 4 speed. I bought the gauges and the entire wiring harness which also had a 4 speaker stereo 8 track. I have a safeguard speedometer out of a 69 which is really rare. Only about 200 or so made off the top of my head.
