Default His and Hers Cable ???

I reinstalled by shifter with a new cable last night.

Where the cable end meets the shifter itself. There is a bolt where the cable mounts too. After installing, the shift was extremely difficult to move in any direction, I thought the cable was binding up. I loosened the nut on the shifter end, and the cable moves very nice now... So I guess that nut should not be tight to allow for the cable end to pivot in a sense...

But..... How tight is to tight or loose? Will the nut fall off with all the vibrations of shifting?

Is a plastic nut to be used?
