Tom I worked in the parts/service at Valentine Marine on college summer when all my normal construction jobs were on strike that summer. People waiting to service their boat the week before July 4th and pissed when there are already 20 in front of them! The marine points for the GM/Mercruiser motors were better than replacement GM points.

I worked as a lead mechanic at an aircraft manufacturer if that counts.

Were you ever located in the GM Service Research garage at the northeast corner of the Tech Center in Warren? Building later called Service Technology Group HQ and then GM Service Operations.

Worked as a mechanic at AMC from 1969 thru 1976 (their best years)
Pontiac from 1976 thru 1982 (not great years)
Chrysler-Plymouth 1982 thru 1999 (some fun stuff)
Parts manager at C-P 1999 and 2000 (pain in the butt job)
Parts and service manager for C-P in 2001 (company was sold and I got out of auto business)

The best years were with AMC. They were into TransAm racing. NASCAR, and pro stock drag racing. There was always a hospitality tent at every race where we were welcomed.

Not a dealer tech but I fit in here . 3rd generation independent shop owner. I gotta say that this is a dying field. I lost my only employee a little over a year ago and boy finding a replacement is tough. Very little ****s given in the auto bus anymore. Kinda scary actually.

My college graduates about 125 "young technicians" a year. We have a little over 400 in continuous rotation through the program. About 40% who start, actually graduate eventually. 75% of them are immediately picked-up by new car dealers who often offer 5000-7500.00 sign on bonus paid out over their first year. We have tracked our graduates and only about 10% are still turning wrenches 5 years out. Pay has certainly increased in the 40 years I have been in the business, but proper respect and other perks typical to college degree professionals is still lacking. There are much easier ways to make allot more money if that's your sole motivation for working.

I have 15 yrs with Chrysler, 5 with GM and 1 with Ford as a flatrate mechanic, and another 15 with independent shops. Also put in 4 yrs at the city garage, which was mostly Ford products. Done with it.

31 years with Ford Motor Co... first 7 as line repair at the end or the trim department, last 23 as a finished vehicle repair technician, last 15 of the 23 specializing in electrical repair primarily powertrain, CAN networking, and a lot of the other electrical crap that someone else didn't want to take the time to figure out.
