Seems like the capillary for the AC temperature switch is typically installed with a large wad of black, sticky goo around the thinner evaporator tube. What is this goo and where do I buy some? Can I just wrap it with silicone tape, instead? Seems like that would look way less ugly and insulate the thermistor just as well.

I call it tar tape. typical in the HVAC/R industry. Stock it at work, yoou can get it at RE Michels or any HVAC store/supply house.

The guys in my son-in-law's shop call it "dum dum". I bought a roll of it from O'Reilly's (or was it AutoZone??)and the counterman knew what I was looking for.
