Looks like they might be getting ready for body drop, based on the "claw" surrounding the body.
Bodies went upstairs to an accumulator, to allow a bank of vehicles to draw from in the event of a breakdown or work stoppage in the body shop, paint, or trim. When the right chassis came along the body was dropped through an opening in the floor onto the final line below. Like this (Flint Assembly shown for reference):

how often did the claw get out of alignment and scratch or dent a body?

Pretty much never. It's got all that padding on it.
Once every blue moon the guy might drop one, or maybe not set it on the chassis correctly. It would be more likely for the clamshell itself to quit working in some way. There is a backup just out of reach which can be pressed into service in order to keep the line running. K

Two legends
Jimi playing bass. Never got to see him. Johnny playing a strat instead of his usual Firebird. I saw him twice, he was absolutely amazing!

Does anyone recognize the drummer?
Hendrix was amazing. I remember seeing some guitarist from that era, can't remember who it was, but they said that they were amazed that Hendrix picked up someone else's guitar that had not been strung for a left-handed player and still played it upside down with the light strings on top and the heavy strings on the bottom. The reason I bring that up is because that looks like what he's doing with that bass. Looks like the thick strings are on the bottom.

I see Pontiac, Olds and Buick A-bodies in the first 4 cars!
It's amazing that many mistakes were not made running that many different models on the same line. James Q

What's hard is building Chevy and GMC pickups down the same line. They are identical except for the badging. We built some trucks that were Chevy's on one side and GMC's on the other. K

I've mentioned before that l worked with a guy who told me that he ordered a 1977 or 1978 Trans Am new and after a few days he noticed that the shaker had 'T/A 6.6' on one side and '6.6 Litre' on the other...lol

Found this in a box of old family photos. None of the men in the picture are relatives so I don't know where it came from, but it appears they're leaning on a 1931 Pontiac.
