Default 71 GTO battery

I got into a discussion the other day about what battery is supposed to be in the 71 GTO. Mine has had a top post in it for over 30 years. My friend was telling me it should have a side post. Looking up replacement batteries they show a side post. Seeing as I'm going to be buying a new battery soon which is correct?

My 71 has a top post. I'm sure it came from the factory that way. I believe this has been discussed before. I'm not sure but the 455 was determined to be a side post. But I can be mistaken.

After refering to my service manual it refers to both types of posts. So maybe the engine does make the difference.

MyT-37 had spring ring top post. April build 455HO. Of course it is only a lowly T-37, so that could be the difference. Oh, yeah. Fremont biilt.

Mines a Fremont built 400,spring ring top post. Could the posts have varied among different assembly plants?

I have a 455 and a 455HO both from Fremont, one early and one late and both are side terminal , the HD battery option was side terminal and was supposed to go with the 455 cars starting in 70 but there are several cars that didn't seem to happen, at the same time if you had a 400 car and it was ordered with the HD battery then it would have had a side terminal battery, you see this more in cold weather states. Years ago I went on an old junk yard tour in MN and I had never seen so many side terminal cars in my life

have several original coded side terminal cables for '71 Pontiac A body's with HD side terminal battery. Anyone have any experience with repro side terminal cables, are they correct???

my own '71 HO keeper cars echo Tim's & Jack's builds, only my 71.5 GT-37 had the standard battery with top posts. T-37 Coupe had the HD battery & side posts, previous triple black HO 4spd GTO, Pontiac plant build as well, also had side post. Many years ago with a partner we together rescued a silver 455 Dport car, built in Jan out of Fremont, it too was original HD battery side post battery car.

Does anyone know if the Delco X maintance free battery was even offered in '71 Pontiac A body's? I have a feeling it was a 455 GP only deal, need to look at the Asm manual...

Another data point for the thread: mine is a side terminal also (HO, 12E out of Fremont). Fortunately I've got the build sheet too: box 47 ("Batt") shows R89S, which is the side terminal. I believe the R89W is the heavy-duty side terminal unit ...

I do know that 455 cars got side-terminals. Mine wasn't an HO car and had them. I know nothing of how that worked with an "H-D Battery" option, though.
