The i.d. on the springs your looking at is nearly the same as a factory spring. No need for a locator.
The picture you posted they might have an ID locator already on there. |

Springs
Ok Jay
I didn’t know what keeps the bottom of the spring from moving if it does at all I thought the originals sit in a pocket and the ones I bought would be smaller than the pocket and possibly move ? Also comp returned my email and he came up with 942-16 springs, |

The comp 924 springs would work with the retainers used on the 995s. You might need a O.D. locator. I think the compcams part number is 4704. With the cam you have if would probably work fine without one.
It looked to me like the heads have stock length valves and the spring pockets were machined deeper. Sometimes the cutter for that removes extra metal off the stem boss and a I.D. locator is used. Maybe it is an optical allusion, your head photo looks like it has a really deep spring pockets and a thick spacer at the bottom. It doesn’t appear to be a O.D. locator, it could be be an ID locator. I can’t tell. Lol Probably a huge flat shim. What ever you pick, shoot for between 120-130 lbs on the seat pressure. For similar valve control jumping between a dual or a single, single spring add 10-15% more spring rate versus a dual, and vice versa for the dual springs superior harmonics control. I have never seen anyone post that % rate number, take it for what it is worth, trial and error. Last edited by Jay S; 10-12-2020 at 04:42 PM. Reason: Typo |

spring hell
Hi Jay
removed one of the springs to get a look and looks to have a locator or a collar on the base tried to lift it up but couldn't valve seal maybe holding it down or some oil. the inner spring is .700 id and has good fit with little movement. the install height is 1.7 I did find those earson style spring kit and ordered them yesterday. in your opinion if that set-up measures 1.7 or very close to that with the retainer that is in the kit I shouldn't have any issues? seen a guy use some string to hold the valve up but no luck used my air and that worked much better.. go figure |

That looks good. They did use an I.D locator, no reason to pull out any of the locators, that is ready to go.
The Erson springs shouldn’t need a shim, unless the retainers or keepers set on the 995s are not neutral on the installed height. Appears like they are neutral, I can’t really tell looking at the photo though. |

Hi Jay
Just got a call from lunati stating no cam blanks available and no time frame to get them national back order ,, Thinking of the 2802 now any take on those ? |

I honestly think the Summit 2802 camshaft would be a great choice for your build, since it has 10.06-1 compression. Just be aware that it doesnt have much attitude at idle in a high compression 400, but it would work great with power brakes and make good power. Almost everyone I've talked with says the 2802 runs really hard in their high compression 400's, and are fine with pump gas. Another really good choice at your compression would be the Crower 60243, it will have a little more attitude at idle, but cost is much higher than the 2802. Summit shows to have the 2802 In Stock at the moment. They were on back-order not too long ago.

If interested, UltraDyne lobes H4 and H9 listed at Bullet are the same as the Lunati cam. .

I believe you have everything covered to do your degreeing, just make you a pointer for your degree wheel. I usually make one out of a metal clothes hanger.
