Default Cheap pump to simulate engine vacuum?

Hi all,

Anyone done the math to know what strength of a pump I would need to simulate engine vacuum? Would like to debug my hideaway headlights without running the motor (pollution and noise in a tight environment).

Hoping to get something on Amazon for cheap that could either plug in or run off the battery. Thanks!

I once wanted a cheap vacuum pump - can't even remember for what- but still have it. I disassembled an old tire inflating pump (12v) and plumbed a line from its intake port as a vacuum source. It works okay, but it's a tiny pump and only pulls 3 in.hg. vaccuum. Perhaps you could do the same with a larger one?

I have an electric Vac pump off i think a 90s or early 2000s car I used for a crank case evac pump on a turbo car it worked well. I do belive it has the cars model and. Year written on it. Next time I’m at my shop I’ll check for it and post if it does . I ended up going to a smog pump off and Isuzu pup I used as a vac pump instead to j
Keep the distick tube from blowing out. Still working great today

I bought this one off Amazon and put it in a little case with a vacuum gauge and terminals to hook it up to 12 volt.

It's slow, but works great, I've used it to diagnose the headlights, HVAC system and distributor advance.

Would a hand pump like what it used to vacuum bleed brakes lines work?

A Mityvac hand pump meant for bleeding brakes will probably do the trick, you can get a kit for around $50.00. https://www.amazon.com/MV8000-Automo...a-316724733774

The hand pump is OK for checking individual components, but for testing the entire system you will need an electric pump. Due to the volume needed. At least that is what I found.

I have a "PIAB" (Brand) vacuum generator that is very small and SUPER powerful, runs off an air supply from your air compressor to generate the vacuum.

Vacuum headlight systems have a reserve tank for service use ( open them for bulb change inside a garage) the reserve in this tank should be able to work with a hand pump once evacuated.
My wife's Rainbow vacuum really works well for some faster action and leak checks.

For large vacuum volumes, an air compressor driven Air-Vac does the trick. It uses a venturi to pull a vacuum. If you ever tries to pull a vacuum on a brake booster with a MiTyVac, you'll appreciate one of these.

Hit the wrecking yards and get a vaccum pump out of a late model Cadillac. They are also used on other cars too. I believe some Volvos have them. Google or Rock auto can help with finding which cars have them.

If you or know someone that does refrigeration or air conditioner work, a deep vacuum pump will work.

Thanks all for the responses. Just changed an actuator and the switch so I'm ready to test.
