Default ohio crank run out

My engine builder, Keith Swafford of Swafford Competition just called me and said that my brand new ohio non twist forged crank has 3 thousandth run out, as I said it is a brand new crank only thing that has been done was balanced and it was put in lathe to lighten the crank in order to get it balanced properly all material was removed from counter weights since it was so far out, I really dont think that has anything to do with it having that much run out, im gunna call jeff kauffman and Ohio crankshaft first thing in the morning to see what ohio can do for me this crank has not been ran at all hope they stand behind this issue, just wanted to see if any of ya guys had any input or issues regarding this same crankshaft its the 4.25" stroke 3" main forged unit thanks guys this is really a bummer but glad my builder checks every detail during assembly.......

He said see what jeff and ohio both say, said he didnt wanna pull on it, said he'll ship crank to ohio if they wanna see it, he doesnt really wanna turn it said he could do it to clean it up and fix it but wants to see what Ohio says since this is a brand new crank, my builder wants everything perfect and checks everything there is to check he is a well known builder and has done machine work for ProLine and steve petty for years so know hes top notch, just pretty much hoping that ohio stands behind this issue, guess we will find out.....

But Ohio crankshaft does their own final machine work in house.

I had a 4.25 stroke 3.25 journal Ohio crank and I needed to do a .010 to make it right. It is cheaper to do it right vs shipping it back and forth. At least you know it's right after your engine builder regrind the crank.

I be damn if ya should have to turn a brand new crank thats kinda screwed up hell didnt have this problem with the cheap eagle cast crank I had, thats sad really charge ya more money for a forged unit but hey guess what ya gotta turn it to make it right thats screwed up if they dont stand behind there product, and if they do not I will never use ohio crank again in any build

Ohio should pay for the shipping back of that crank and the shipping out of another crank that meets spec!!!

Not second guessing your machinist, but it would seem that would be the first order of business to check for run out before any other machine work was performed?

Jeff or Scott are good to deal with at Ohio. It's best to buy directly from them, have them do the machine work and catch any glitches. They can do just about any procedure to a crank, (or have specialty work done for you).

You may be right, by im not second guessing him either, like i said he is top notch does machine work for ProLine, Steve Petty as well as Tim Lynch and builds alot of X-275 engines, I dont care if it was the first thing he found or the last just glad he caught it before the motor was assembled and it cost me my race motor, may be a pile of junk compared to some of you guys but hoping for the best out of it since its not really streetable anymore, and the amount of money I've sunk in this build to shut up alot of grudge racers in my area and planning on doing it with my little ole Pontiac, engine is a 461ci 14:1 compression zero decked and hard blocked sd deluxe mega brace, program caps, JE flat tops, Eagle H-beams with ARP 2000 rod bolts, ohio 4.25" crank, comp solid roller spec'd by jeff kauffman 277/288@50, 485/471 lobes with 112 lobe sep, and crower solid roller lifters, trend pushrods, HS 1.65 rockers, heads are KRE high ports 368cfm with all PAC springs and titanium retainers, modified victor intake to match heads and dominator, have No idea what it will make power wise but should be pretty wicked id think..... we'll find out after getting thus crank deal situated cuz I plan on putting it on dyno up at Swafford Competition

My billets from Ohio and a forged one from Eagle for my 409 build both had lots of taper. Crank shop guy had it on his high end crank lathe to show me, and I could even see the Eagle on my Chinese mikes. Most of these cranks 'final machining" where the journals are mirror polished they use a belt like that on a belt sander and it is not rigid enough to give a even surface.

Any good build they need to be checked. If they have been balanced by your machine shop they might not do anything and the crank guy my machine shop told me the next one they send you might be worse!

The very first thing I do with new cranks is.....check runout, mic journals, mic snout, mic seal surface diameter, measure thrust width. Then I check all the oil holes, balance, and final polish

I had a Eagle cast 4.25 x 3 crank and it was bent .004 and had .001 taper on the rod journals. I had it ground .010-.010. Still have it, never been run with new FM race bearings.

I'd call them 1st. & talk to them about it & see what they think. See if there willing to check a new crank for you at their shop & then IF it's correct have them send it to you free shipping & also have them send a call ticket for your bad crank so your not paying for the shipping back to them on the bad crank. At the worst they may say turn the crank, which I wouldn't want to do on a new crank. But call them 1st. They have a good rep. & will probably take care of it but you can't guess call them. Today !!!!!!

Not unusual. We sent my forging (not from Ohio) to mile high crankshaft for the full tune up and re-heat treat. Forgings these days (from whomever) seem to be a crapshoot. If you want perfect, you have to step up to a billet.

Question

Having cut the counterweights before your shop checked for straight might be a problem on a return. Also depending on how much they tried too take at a time might be an issues as far as the crank out .003
Was it shipped straight from Ohio?
