Default The Fighting Sullivans

A few years ago I watched this movie called "The Fighting Sullivans". It's about the 5 Sullivan brothers who were killed in action when their ship was sunk.
The USS The Sullivans was named after those 5 brothers and christened by their mother.

An Arleigh Burke class destroyer is the current namesake.

The picture I saw looked even worse than one above, more sunk in water. It said a major hull breach of some kind. Pretty sad, and probably hard for a museum type facility to consider that kind of extensive $$$ repair. Maybe a national Gofund effort or something.

So, how many have sent money to support the salvage operation?

I have sent money. Might be good to get it in a permanent "dry dock" near the water, but out of it for future upkeep.

Should you toss your Trans am due to all the rust? It Is part of history too.
No offense, just trying to see if you can relate on a smaller LvL.
I think it should be dry docked if it can be saved.

The water-filled compartments can have bladeers installed and inflated; bladders and labor won't break the bank.

A sister ship of the Sulivans, the USS Kidd, is permanently docked in a cradle on the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge, LA.
The Sullivans condition is causing angst locally about the Kidd, but it still looks sound.

We took our homeschool group (SW MS) to the Kidd a few weeks ago. It needs some work, but in decent shape. Was the first time I’ve been aboard it since the 80s

The Sullivans Normally has 5 feet of water below the keel Aft.
Most likely its now touching. Tough to use convential lifting methods at its location without moving at least 2 vessels. The USS Cole got a ride for repairs

The PT boats are mostly sitting rotting up in NY and those are a
Much simpler repair due to size and materials . It’s funny I know a guy who gets paid huge money to store things for the navy. Old wooden patterns etc. Lives well off it. Yet projects like this don’t get funding

Cole had a much bigger hole. The news I've read on the Sullivans said the dewatering efforts are removing water faster than it's coming in.

The news also said they stopped the dive efforts because the water was too cold... I wonder who they called? Buddy of mine is a commercial diver and he's worked in the Detroit river in January. I doubt it gets a whole lot colder than that!

If you hear about the water being too cold, It is NOT about temp for Divers.
The marine repair Company, in this case its "Bidco" I believe, uses a "epoxy" patch system
which REQUIRES the Temp of the hull, and water to be at or above 54 Degrees Fahrenheit
for the Epoxy to cure properly.
Obviously this type of repair is only good for a stationary vessel and in No way is considered a "seaworthy" repair.
The amount of water this ship is taking on would indicate rust around previous patches and full collapse of those areas.
These ships have a single thick hull mostly and is less than 3/8" in most areas to cut down on weight for better speed.
This ship NEEDS a dry dock for REAL repairs and or a dry dock for Permanent display to reduce costs and keep them low.
The amount of Fuel removed from this ship was disturbing, like 23,000 gallons.
While fuel oil is a great Ballast, and may have been needed for the tow to Buffalo, other ballast measures should have been procured
once the ship was at the dock to keep it at correct level in the water.
Keep in mind, former Navy Vessels are OWNED by the Navy ( even wooden ones) . They are on Lease to the various
non profits as care takers.
Imagine the cost to maintain a COMMISSIONED Wooden Ship in the Navy...

And she (USS CONSTITUTION) probably gets better care than the fleet.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Constitution

Another ship in need of repair is the USS Olympia in Philadelphia. Admiral Dewey's flagship when entering Manila Bay. She had temporary repairs made in 2014 to keep from sinking. Now looking for $20M for dry-docking to make the repairs permanent.

Or do what the Swedes did with their first "battleship". The most powerful warship built at the time (1600s) she sank on her maiden voyage. The Swedish government salvaged it several years ago and built a museum around it. My daughter visited the museum earlier this month. She says they even kept the skeletons where they found them.

That makes sense. I don't remember if the article said they stopped diving to investigate because of temps, or if they stopped diving to make repairs because of temps.
