Question New body panels that come painted black.

On new body panels and parts they come painted black. i was told once its like a preservative. What is it called? After soda blasting a car body clean should a guy have it painted with this stuff? Any other advice?

Stuffs called EDP primer. Opinions vary. I like good mechanical adhesion.

And some of it is better quality than others. If it's really stuck, you can scuff and shoot. I have seen it comes of easily as well. I tend to take it to bare metal and epoxy prime.

One good way to check the edp quality is to wipe a little lacquer thinner on it. If it wipes the black primer off, remove it all. If it doesn't, sand and prime/seal. Irgoatmike

I have seen it hold up to thinner but have poor mechanical adhesion. We used to use some carpet tape and pull test the coating. But ran out of thatsuper stickystuff and have not found a good replacement. We usually scratch test now and more often than not, it all comes off for sand and epoxy.
