Yessir Jack and in case you could not tell, I was hinting for you to get your killer new engine running in that slick vehicle you are building and get these babies on and actuating!

Seriously, I was very impressed as this was the first time I have heard them on the 400 Pontiac with all the right pipes and chrome tips. They will sound differently on different engines with different exhaust systems but now I know why this owner was so excited to let me hear how they sounded and worked.

Take care Jack and keep that amazing fabrication you are currently involved in going strong!!

And for those of you that have never seen it under the column of 1970 GTO's, here is the famed "Tiger Button"!

And it is not a great shot but here is the driver's side from the rear showing the fabulous Gardner pipes and the spring on the muffler.

Nicely done, Tom.

I have seen some of these on early GM cars many, many years ago when I was working in the restoration shoppe. Of course, they were mostly rotted away then, but they certainly looked interesting.

I am surprised so few people remember the strange 'crossflow' that GM used on the early Z-28's that had the headpipes entering the sides of the muffler case up over the axle.

I also recall a few Z-28's that had the optional 'chambered' exhaust system. Now that was a loud system!

So, with your VOE mufflers, are you trying more to fill a niche in the restoration market, or make them widely available as an alternative to currently available products???...Robert

We'll need Tom to say WHY he put forth such an effort- but I'm just glad he did!

Hey Tom- I sure would love to have a label like is shown with the 'Tiger' button. Is that an original, or a reproduction, or did you make it, or ???

Good day,
I am sorry for waiting so long to answer these. I was not aware I had more responses on this string.

BLHU,
I am trying to borrow a switch to see how it is made but I am having a tough time getting the new one I have found.

Jack,
No I did not make the decal but I think with today's technology, recreating it might not be too tough. I have no plans to try though; that is out of my area of expertise.

68 Wardog,
The case size we have to use at this time has no capability of anything larger than 2.5" internal tubes and that is tough to fit them. The OEM used 2.25" inlet pipe so we are lucky the larger 2.5" is possible.

Tanksta,
I have money here now for eight or so pair and we plan to make them over the next many months. If it goes well, we shall try a few again later.

Thanks,
Tom

Tom
I have a VOE optioned car and I'am interested in a set of VOE II's. Could you let me know what kind of $$. I'm in the process of restoring my goat and I plan on using some kind of system to make it sound like it's suppose to. A set of mufflers that you build would be the correct item and they are what I want. Please let me know.
Thanks

Good day all. Got another set finished and had a chance to sound test them today. It is 98 degrees F here and I had them on my 1969 340, 10.75:1 compression Plymouth Barracuda with 1986 mandrel bent Mustang 2.5" tailpipes. I measured the sound level from ten feet.
Closed Open
Idle (750 rpm) 72 dBA 81 dBA
2200 rpm 82 dBA 95 dBA
3500 rpm 91 dBA 100 dBA

As the others have, these sound almost dead stock quiet when closed and raspy and rumbly with some resonation when opened.

Some may notice these are polished. I did this for a special reason and trust me, holding an 18 pound muffler in front of a buffing wheel is very hard and anyone that does this for living must have tremendously strong arms. I am really worn out after doing this for only about 30 minutes today!!!
Never again. But, they do look awesome I must say.
Tom

Could you post a cfm or "horsepower" rating per muffler using the largest(2.5), you have availible?
What I am getting at is,assuming the rest of the exhaust is up to it,at what level(HP) do they become a restriction in the "open mode"?
A good guesstimate would be fine.

Shotgun, very good question. In the open mode, these flow slightly more air than most offset-offset 2.5" multi-chamber Flowmasters used on street and some race Pontiacs; around 260 CFM at 20.3" of water pressure. Closed, they flow about the same amount of air as a stock muffler does. HP wise, they would be okay on a stock 300 to 350 HP (dyno power).

They are not intended to be a true performance muffler but work very sweetly on stock or slightly modified engines. Remember, back in 1970, when they were new and used in the open mode, they actually added a lot of air flow and I bet they would have made a tenth or so over a stock muffler. If I can ever get a set built for my car, I could run them at the track and see how they act.

Because of size constraints, 2.5" is the largest internal tubes that can be used safely in them. If I can ever find 5" by 11" oval components, then we can step up and create a 3" version but so far, that is not happenig too swiftly.

More importantly, what is most cool about these is that you can go from almost dead stock sound levels to a chambered muffler's sound levels. I think they truly give a person the best of both worlds when it comes to mufflers. Make obnoxious noise only when you want to.
Tom

Tom,
By 5x11 compnents are you talking about the "divider plates" or the whole case?
The reason I am asking is in my building is a full metal fab shop.We are allowed to use all the toys including the water jet.
Is this something that I could maybe help you with?
Also is it possible to have you send a set partially assembled.I would like to put a 3" inlet on a set, looks very doible based on all the pictures you posted.
Let me know.
Click on my link for my number if you want to call.
