Default Where does this go??

Was just out in the garage and looking the motor over a little more closer. I was amazed at some of the shoddy wiring work that someone did. After spending all that money on restoration, they fell way short here. I would have done some of these things when I was 13 and didn't know any better. I hope to post a pic of a wire that goes underneath the gas line and hangs behind the water pump. It has a 2 prong female end and also a horseshoe type end that had been expanded to fit around one of the thermo housing bolts. I believe it is a ground belonging to this other wire. Anyone have any idea where this might go?? Probably a moot point for now. My car cover came today and I'm going to button it up until warmer weather or I can swap things around. I'm also going to try and buy a color schematic of the wiring. Another thing of interest I found. It has a HEI distributor. I don't know much about these. I would have preferred the regular points distributor. In the past, I have put Mallory Unilites in them and they work quite well, Carmine.

What type of heater and radiator hose clamps did they use in '71? Tower, spring or screw type? Thanks, Carmine.

That plug looks like the one for the A/C compressor as well as the ground! It will go on one of your A/C bracket bolt's. I will get you a picture of what it should look like. Should have the tower type clamp's!

OK Lyn. Thanx for the pic.

Just bundled it up with a new car cover and before doing so, took a look at the heads. Saw a number on the 3&5 exhaust ports. Took a small wire brush to it and the number is "98". It could be "96" but I'm almost positive it's "98". I tried finding out some info about this number head, but didn't. Don't know if they are good/not so good or stock for the '71 400. If someone could tell me about these heads or direct me where to look, I'd be appreciative, Carmine.

Think I just found my answer. The "98" is actually "96". Fooled me. There are some '71 400 "96" heads on ebay. Nothing about "98".

98's would be 455 Heads . If you think it looks that close to a "96", try to see if all your engine date codes line up (block/heads). That may help with the puzzle.

OK. Thanks. I really did think the number was "98" until I started looking at heads for '71 and came upon "96". I went no further to different years thinking the "8" was actually a "6". Oh boy. I'm going to try and raise this number even better. Maybe chalk across the top. I'll look at the other head also.
Assuming for the moment that these heads are the "98's", 455 heads, is that a good or bad thing?? How would it matter?? Thank you, Carmine,

Just scaled the number real well and chalked it. Definitely the number "96".

Good deal, as if those heads had been 98's on a 400, static compression ratio would have been in the basement.

Might look on the heads on the ledge close to the side of the valve cover.. There wil be a date, like H240. With your '71 being shipped in Dec, I'd bet he heads are dated in August or very early Sept (Hxx0 or Ixx0) due to the 67 day UAW strike & how assembled engines set at the assembly plants waiting to go into 71's after the strike was resolved.

Certainly learned something about the heads today. The 98's could be found on the 455 and both valves were smaller then the 96's. The 98's also had a larger volume combustion chamber, then the 96's, which I believe equals a lower compression ratio. I'm glad I have the 96's.

Took my time and looked at the chart of the various heads which I found interesting. Started in '65 and went to '73. The heads in many various years, had the same size valves but there were a few changes. You could see from '65 forward the size of the combustion chamber stayed pretty stable through '70, with various engines. Then in '71, the size increased and the compression ratio decreased. Got worse in '72, '73 and beyond. Good reading, Carmine.

Recently, I've been ordering repair books and manuals to help myself with a little more understanding. Today, a box arrive from Ames which was a little on the heavy side. I had to wonder, what the heck did I buy now. I opened the box and saw some booklets and two very thick manuals taped together. My first thought was that I ordered doubles of something; again. Oh boy. Took them out of the wrapping and saw that it was my 1971 Pontiac Service Manual that I had ordered. They were two separate books, about 1.5 inches thick. Briefly looked through them both and couldn't believe the quality. I know they are reprints, but the illustrations and wording was so clear. You could easily read them and the pictures were very sharp. I am very pleased with them. I already found and had explained a few things I was looking for. A good investment, Carmine.
