According to the DeMauro book "Pontiac GTO", you could order UPC D98 (Pontiac order form 614) to get the Rally stripes installed. They were not the same as the Judge stripes and Phoenix Graphics supposedly still make them. Search " Phoenix Graphics" and see previous threads. I believe thy cost about $200 give or take.

Carmine,
There were multiple types of stripes available, but the 2 flavors of eyebrow stripes were the D98 2-stripe and the 3-stripe (available only on the Judge). See pics below (the second one is PY member Judge273's car - super fine example of the breed). I hope you're successful in your pursuit of a '71. IMO they are among the most attractive A-bodies Pontiac ever made. And, speaking of green '71s, you'll be among the minority if you track down that Tropical Lime car, in terms of seeing one at a show or cruise-in. Personally, I love the green cars. My first car (senior in high school) was a triple-green '71 LeMans Sport: Limekist with green top and Jade interior. I took endless crap on the colors but I loved that body style and that car. Only had a 350 2bbl, but that helped in keeping out of trouble. Best of luck in your search!

If I ever get a '71, I would probably replicate the 2 stripe version like you would see from the factory. I checked into Phoenix Graphics, a good lead from a member here, and it seems they produce any stripe you want. Encouraging. I was never a big fan of any shade of green, but I'm suppose to look at one (green) this coming Monday, about 25 miles from me. Suppose to have been fully restored. We'll see, Carmine. |

Don't worry about it - all of us here are learning something from each other as well. We all bring something to the table.

To complicate things even more. The two color eyebrow stripe D98 was part of the option package on the early 1971 GT-37...later sword stripe was standard. Busy year as it seems.
The other part of the GT-37 option package was hood pins and it's the only time Pontiac put factory pins on a production car.

Looked at '71 today
Hi everyone. Finally got my chance to see a '71 GTO up front and in person today. The beauty of it is, only 35 minutes from me. Met about 12N at the sellers house. Very nice home. Nice area. The car was already outside the garage waiting for me. Took a good look at it. It is that tropical lime green. I've never seen it before. The paint I'm told is a repaint about 6 years ago. It's bc/cc. The paint has a nice shine to it. Didn't see any cracking, fracturing or orange peel. Overall, the paint is very nice. The gaps between the doors, fenders, panels, hood and trunk are ok. They could probably use a little adjustment but nothing critical. The car is a solid green but it originally came with a dark green vinyl top. The owner said the previous owner had the top removed and painted. He presently has 2 sets of trim for the top. The window glass looks to be original and not cracked. The whiskers and other rubber glass parts are in decent shape. The interior is interesting. It is presently black but came from the factory a jade? green. Not sure why it was changed. The dash is fine but the radio has been removed and is available. Unknown if it works. The trunk is in very nice condition and appears to have been redone. It appears that the driver side rear quarter has been replaced. They did a very nice job but the welding doesn't match exactly the factory welding on the other side (in the trunk lid channel). The quarters appears very straight. No waves. The doors and front fenders are also very nice. I don't own a bondo finder gadget, but I did tap all the metal and don't think I detected any signs of serious bondo. Crawled underneath. Both sides. Very clean. Painted black. New exhaust system. Next checked the engine compartment. A numbers matching 400 motor. Engine compartment is clean but needs attention. This is an a/c car but the compressor is missing. Didn't come with the car. All other parts appear to be there. Carb. is a Holley with a manual choke. YUCK. Has headers that are disgusting looking. I don't think it is an original distributor. Started the motor and it ran well. Didn't hear any unusual sounds. Let it warm up and it still sounded fine.
Took it for a test ride and didn't go very far. There is still the remnants of sand and salt on the road. The car tracked fine but I'm a little concerned about the 400 turbo trans. shifting. It seems lazy/sluggush. Motor responded well, but I really didn't request much of it. The brakes were real bad. Returned and spoke with the owner about those 2 issues. The trans. is the original one numbers matching (is that possible?) which he had rebuilt 6 years ago when he got the car. When he bought the car it had a 350 turbo in it which he replaced with the 400. As for the brakes which are power brakes, when the motor was rebuilt about 6-7 years ago by the previous owner, he opted for a non stock cam. Have no idea what it is. Doesn't sound that bad but there is very little vacuum to operate the power brakes. The present owner bought the car from a dealer in PA. about 6 years ago. As I saw it today, is the way he bought it. He claims that the previous owner had a body off frame restoration done on this car prior to the sale. He has a photo album of the work done to document everything. He also has the PHS documentation, but I didn't look at neither this time. He thinks the car was manufactured on the West coast. Let's see, what else?? The wheels are Rallye 2's in very nice shape. Idiot lights in the dash. Everything seems to work. No tach. I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but if I remember, I'll post it. Oh yeah, posi rear. Don't know the ratio. I'm waiting for the pics to arrive at my email. Then I will post them. I'm going to send this thread out separately for review. After you read this and look at the pics, I would appreciate any opinion or advice you would like to share. I'm leaning towards buying this car, but not quite sure yet. I do want to see it again and review the photos and PHS papers. My concerns/issue/changes: -transmission -buying an a/c compressor and other parts to make it work -no vacuum for the power brakes. I need them more then a cam. Wondering if an aftermarket vacuum storage can would work? -stock exhaust manifolds or factory headers which I see are sold -the biggie is the interior. I want it put back to jade green if that was the factory original. -install vinyl top which he already has. Thanks for looking, Carmine. |

I think it looks great and doesn't sound like any serious issues that aren't normal for a 45 year old car. I'd offer $22000 with cash in my pocket

I don't think we did so good posting pics here. Is there a thread explaining this that someone could link me to for better results?? Thanks, Carmine.

Sounds like a nice car. If the trans is matching numbers, it will have a stamping of ( I think ) partial VIN on the drivers side directly above the pan. The A/C parts can all be bought and re-installed. Unusual color( supposedly only about 789 built) and , in my opinion, the most beautiful. BTW, most cams should produce enough vacuum to run the brakes unless it is has radical overlap. Also, trans does use vacuum for shifting so that may be related. It would be interesting to see the PHS.

The interior is in nice shape except it's black and I don't like it. If I bought the car, I would install a new jade green interior. Out of curiosity, where does everyone buy their new interiors?? Thank you, Carmine.
