Smile I've had quite a few 'factory-equipped' Rally II cars over the years.....

And each one of them had a Rally II in the trunk, too. Usually, the cars that had been converted to mag wheels still had the Rally II in the trunk.

I've seen a few with Rally IIs and the standard steel spare - I presumed that the Rally IIs weren't factory and that whoever added them only paid for four wheels, leaving the original spare rim (and sometimes tire) in the trunk.

But that's just MY experience - your mileage may vary.....

Goodyear and Firestone were the most common OEM tire supplier, with Uniroyal and General tire supplying as well, for all styles RWL/WW/BW in G70x14 size in 1970.

Most GS's had the stylish chrome Buick Road Wheels.

FYI.

I'm the original owner of a special order 1970 GTO. My car arrived from Arlington, TX, plant with poverty hubcaps, steel wheels, and G78-14 Goodrich duel narrow stripe WW tires. The spare tire, which I still have, is a same duel narrow stripe tire mounted on a steel wheel. The steel wheels, including the spare steel wheel, were factory painted the body color of the car, Atoll Blue.

The tires appear to be the same tires as the tires in the above Stage 1 convertible photo.

These tires can be purchased as repops from Coker Tire. I did not see them in their online catalog, but I called Coker company on the phone and they had them in stock as of a couple of weeks ago.

ID:	610228I just purchased a set of JL wheels from the original owner of a 70 GTO that switched the 14s out for 15s years ago. Included was this spare G78-14 Firestone which appears to be the original spare the GTO came with. I posted on the Pontiac GTO forum and a link to this thread was posted so I thought I would post this here if anyone is still interested.

That is one beautiful spare tire. What was the codes (numbers) of the wheels? What is the DOT number of the tire?

If. Muons is interested in a set of thin white walls let me know. I had a set made for my 69 GTO and ended up going with white letter tires after I wrapped it.

Bought from diamondback tire a few months ago, maybe 150 miles on them.

The info on the tire is "DOT 147" and on the back 0027L256. I couldn't find any info on these codes. My car came with G70x14s so this tire doesn't work for me.

Yes. Unfortunately the codes have never been ID'ed. I was also asking about the format surrounding the valve stem, IE...M19 7 (valve stem) 25 JL. If you are selling, I may be interested as a conversation piece.

This is an interesting subject, my 70 Accessorizer is dated February 23rd 1970 and it shows that all GTO tires were G70. Apparently all standard tires on every 1970 GM car were fiberglass belted (in previous years fiberglass belts were extra charge. Also unlike previous years GTO's no longer had redlines as standard (with whitelines no charge option). In the accessorizer it states that the standard GTO tire was the PF blackwall, optional at extra cost was PR white line and PL white letter (white line option not available with Judge option). All three were G70 size. Looking at the 70 Hi perf brochure (dated 9-69) it lists the same standard tire (G70 black) and the same two optional G70 white line and white letter. The full line brochure (dated 9-69) GTO page isn't much use as it only has car illustrations and it shows a GTO convertible with red lines, a GTO hardtop with twin white and a Judge hardtop with white lines. The deluxe full line brochure also has illustrations but different cars with different tires: a GTO hardtop and convertible have redlines and the judge has black walls.

However, I have seen 70 GTO's with original spare G78 twin whites in junkyards.

Similarly some factory documents say the 67 GTO was supposed to have G70 tires as standard

Wonder if it was a mid year change?

Eric White's identification guide calls out the G78 blackwall as the standard tire for the GTO with the G70s optional. Load range D, G78s were also optional with the trailer package.

Steve, the Sept. 18th 1969 '70 Accessorizer stated the std. for GTO was G78-14. The std. for The Judge was G70-14.
