Personally after 30 years of looking at gtos. I've never seen one with the 2 stripes. Those tires are always on lemans, grand prixs and full size cars. Gtos always had just 1 stripe.

I know that what was shown in the brochures doesn't mean much, but…

Wouldn't the dual white stripes indicate the G78-14 tire option? My '71 Bonneville has the original dual white stripe spare (J78-15) that was an option.

Correct. I've only seen dual whites in the g78-14 size. Most GTO' s ive seen are g70-14 . My bad.

Thanks Held For Ransom great gt37 article
My phs says G70x14 WW FG I believe this means G70 14 Single stripe Fiberglass ? pg 48 of the GTO Assoc bible shows a double stripe thus single or double but 30 year experience leads me to belive there was no 70 gto double stripe? My partial build sheet shows Tires number 38 P and number 39 R Thanks Last edited by 70peppergreen; 09-02-2015 at 11:56 PM. |

My PHS also says G70x14 WW FG code TPR, the car came with W/COV-DLX. Would the wheel cover option maybe dictate which white walls or tire it came with?
I've never seen dual stripes on a GTO |

If your phs shows g70-14 then your car definitely had a single stripe white wall.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/70-GTO-JUDGE...f3718c&vxp=mtr And it would be the thin white on a G series. Over the years, I have saved hundreds of pics of original cars and none of them have the double stripe on a 70 GTO. I have a few 70 survivor car pics where the spare tire was still intact and they have the thin white stripe. The dealer brochures pictures where shot way before production started and there are many other things in the brochures you would not see on a production car.

The G78-14 was the dual stripe whitewall, found on many regular GTO's, but not on Judges. It was coded TRR on invoices and window stickers. Most GTO's were ordered with G70-14 (single white pinstripe) tires. The same G78-14 dual pinstripe tire was used by Buick in 1970 on their Skylark and GS models.
If your invoice shows G78x14 WW FG, that's the dual white pinstripe. If your invoice shows G70x14 WW FG, that's the single white pinstripe. If your invoice shows G70x14 WL FG, that's the raised white-letters. Mike

Must be a 70 availability thing. Factory ordering catalog shows no G78-14 available on 71 GTO's.

According to Mike, my 455 GTO would have come with the dual white stripe, on Rally II's. Picture is a '70 GP455. |

I think these are repopped now, but haven't researched it. This was at the MCACN show last year. I have NO idea why the original owner (or dealer) chose to order a beautiful Diplomat Blue 1970 Buick GS Stage 1 convertible with a 4-speed and then opted for the wire hubcaps and double-white pinstripes, but that's the way the car was ordered. Most GS's had the stylish chrome Buick Road Wheels.

Brands of tires used?
I have a '70 'vert that came with the G70-14 WW FG TPR tires and was wondering the same question: one stripe or two? Thanks to the earlier posts for clearing that up.
How about manufacturer brands used? Firestone Wide Ovals were obviously used for the raised white letter but what about the narrow single and double stripe tires? Were one brand sourced for the single and another for the double?
