Default 70 Vs 71 GTO Hood latch/Pull

Can anyone tell me if a 71 GTO Hood latch/ Pull handle assembly will fit a 70 GTO?
Thanks

The latch is the same, but everything else is different (IIRC).

Default 71 latch assembly pics and part needed

Guys, jumping into this thread with a request - restoring a 71 GTO that had the front end damaged years ago before I bought the car - it looks like the damaged 71 hood latch assembly was replaced with one from 68-70. Someone fabricated a z-shaped pull that runs from the latch thru the grill mesh. I'm needing pics of what the correct latch assembly should look like as well as any suggestions on where to find the correct latch assembly - Ames Perf has the repro release rod but doesn't have a supplier for the 71 latch assembly.

There were actually two different style pull rods for the '71 endura nose A-bodys. First style was pre-strike. 2nd was the improved upon version & was used on '72's as well.

I was wondering about that Roger, as I assembled one earlier this summer. Here's some pics of both. The 72 ones are much beefier on the cross mount brace. 71 on the rt.

On my 70 GTO the rod comes out of the drivers grille. On my 72 the rod is below the grille

Default my latch assembly - 71

Thanks guys - info on the assemblies and the pics are very helpful. I attached a pic of the latch assembly pulled from my 71. Based on Pat's pics, looks like I don't have the correct latch. Mine has the larger hole for the hood release rod on the drivers side and the release has to be pulled forward toward the grill to pop the hood. Please let me know what you think. Also, anyone have a lead on where I might be able to find the correct latch and support?

Steve, how much of the latch assembly do you need? I'd sell the one pictured as a whole unit. Pm for more info.

The latch pictured is Pt.# 9857248 and is a 1970 GTO or 1970-1981 Firebird latch

I'm just talking the latch assembly here. 1968,1969,1971,1972 are the same and interchange. 1970 GTO's used the same latch as the 1970-1981 Firebird. The main latch catch on 1970 and earlier had 10 detents in it, sometime during the 70 model year this changed to 4 detents. The 10 and 4 detent latch's are interchangeable. The only physical difference in these two part numbers are the actual release lever used, so you could take any 1970-1969 Firebird latch and change out the release lever and make it correct foe a 68,69,71 or 72 GTO.

Reproductions are available for both of these latch's. But they are plated wrong and the rivets are staked with an X so that is wrong and looks awful. Other than that I would say the quality is good. As bought I also would say unusable on a restored car. The price on the repops are around $50.00, my restoration price on original latchs ranges from $125.00 to $160.00.

Part# 9857248 all F 1970-1981, 1970 A (GTO)

Part# 9716615 1968-1969 A (GTO) w/endura 1971-1972 A (GTO) w/endura

Default Restored latches

Norwood, thanks for the post. Looks like I have "core" for a '70. What would be the cost to swap this to you for a restored latch assembly for my '71?

I realize this is an old thread and I may not get a response. In post #11 and #12 the picture of the latch assembly with the rod shows a small "U" shaped piece that goes on the end of the rod where it inserts into the latch. Has anybody ever seen a source for that small "U" shaped part? Thanks.
