Remember when I say right I mean Passenger side. There is a flat machined surface just below the head and beside the water pump. If it is clean I have used chalk to make the letters stand out more.

Yes I'm on the passengers side on the flat machined surface just below the lower radiator hose on the block.I cant see how chalk is going to work if I cant even see the numbers.

Judge Man, did you look where Jacks' picture had the partial VIN? Here is another picture with the partial VIN stamped (partially covered by heater hose) near the engine code and the M.U.N.

Remember, this is an alternate location to look for the Fremont built cars only (to this point). All of the other plants have them stamped here (at least, that I know).

Well I found the vin# that I was looking for,it was right by the heater hose on the block.The # on the block matchs the vin on the car so I'm a happy camper right now.I still need to check the vin on the trans.I appreciate everybodys help on this I'm greatful.

Judge Man,
Glad to help. The assembly line was not an exacting science. Probably the closest toleraces were engine, trans and rear ends. The stamping of codes on the trans, engine, rearend were secondary to getting the car down the assembly line. I am one of those that believe that if they ran out of a particular part they substituted with what ever was handy and would fit or in some cases simply left them out if they were trim pieces. My car is proof of that as I bought it new and disassembled the engine myself and have the original camshaft (which was wrong) and have pictures of the cid call out being missing. Never say never.
