Default Help with Z-bar to block 71 T37

Hey Guys just getting the drivetrain into my 71 T-37 resto project.

It was originalyl a 6 cyl car, then someone converted it to sbc/th350. I just installed a 400/m22 combo.

I am not familiar with the z-bar setup, i purchased everything i need and i can get it to function and feels good, and returns nice. My only issue, is the bolt that goes into the block that holds the z-bar swivel.

I think the tq setting for this bolt was 30 + lbs. If i tighten this bolt that much, theres no way this will smoothly swing, the back of the z bar will just grind against the block face. Are there suppose to be shims? or some kind of thing that helps this move freely. It moves real nice as it is, but wont take long for the bolt to vibrate loose. Please look at this video at 8:27 of the issue im talking about https://youtu.be/1q9gJ1HLfkU?t=8m26s

Still trying to learn! thanks guys.
Cheers, Sam.

off the top of my noggin, I believe there is a bushing that goes over the bolt but inside z assembly, and hits the block before z assembly. I made my bushings from krylon? looked like brass. been a long time since I have dealt with it. I remember there was not a lot of clearance to work with when I installed mine, but has held up well. maybe someone will post a pic soon for you , good luck. SLASH

Sam,

There is a bearing/spacer that goes between the bracket and the block that allows the lever to swivel. You also need washers on each side of that spacer.

Hope that helps! I'm watching your videos on Youtube! Looks like a very thorough documentary

Z-Bar unit:

Washers (3702807):

Bolt (9427314):

Spacer (9791018):

thanxs mesca. I am sure I must have used those washers also when I bushed mine. remember using a lathe to turn my bushing down so it fit snug inside z-bar. matter of fact, iirc, I welded a thicker piece/pipe onto my assembly where the bolt runs through. factory thin piece tended to oval or crack with time/wear. amazing how a little play anywhere in the z-bar assembly is magnified at the pedal.

I always replace the original bushing when doing a manual conversion. Originals are always shot. You wonder why the pedal is loose, that little bushing makes quite a difference!

The lever may seems tight when you torque down the bolt, but you have a lot more force pushing against the linkage with your leg to the pedal.

Hey Guys, thanks all again for the help,

i found what i needed and ordered this. I didn't need the bolt again but was cheap enough to just re-order

If anyone is looking for one this apparently has the correct washers also.

1972 Service Manual page 7-5 says 70 lb-ft. Note #4.

Ball stud is 20 lb-ft.
