Sorry for your loss! I've been there a few times in my life with dogs. We have a one year old male yellow lab. Picking up a female pup today! They bring a lot of joy while they're here.

So sorry for you and your family's loss Ace will be missed, a good a faithful dog he was! We are getting to the end with our Lab life as well and see her unconditional love and desire to be young again! But we will endure and start over again!.

Drake, we just did the same with our 16-year-old Rotty named Bob last Wednesday night.
It has been a very sad, depressed home since, and my wife has been crying non-stop. She has really struggled with the "we should have given him more time" guilt and doubt. Brutal to lose our friend and "child" of 16 years.

Thanks everyone!
“She has really struggled with the "we should have given him more time" guilt and doubt.“ That’s exactly it. When do you say when? He could still get around, but many times stumble and fall up or down steps. Couldn’t hold anything in his bladder, ect. It was so tempting to give him more time. The guilt comes in when I had to pick a day to do it, instead of watching him wither away and drive my wife nuts cleaning up after him while I’m at work.

Years ago, we let another one of our dogs go too long because we let hope get the best of us.
Looking back at his pictures, he was a virtual skeleton in poor shape. He kept getting stuck outside in the palmettos and vines, or inside under corner tables as he was half blind and fully deaf. We swore to never let another dog suffer like him. The temptation to let Bob live another 3 months was very strong, but like yours, he was falling about 20 times a day. What confused us was the fact that he was still playful with our other current dog. Very tough decision.

Sometimes they decide, and let you know. When they don't, we have to remember we have a duty to do right by them.

My heart goes out to you. We have had to give the gift of no more pain, no more hurting to our pets before. Most recently ,it was our kitty, Maple. While nothing but time takes away some of the grief and anguish we felt in the days immediately following our loss, nothing ever stops the feeling of missing them. So sorry for your loss. Ace was your pal. Keep that in your heart.

@67drake I went through the exact same set of emotions you have now when I put my Corgi/Pit Bull mix down in 2008. Lost my Mom, step dad and one of my good friends all that year, but the dog was the one I went to pieces over. I got another one 4 weeks later, and now she's got problems. I know I'll go to pieces over her, too.
Animals are the ones you wish humans could be more like, IMO...and that's why it hurts so much. Sorry for your loss. Hang in there. Maybe in time you can open your heart & home to a rescue pooch. Jim |

Obviously, I have no way of knowing how you came by your woof-mate, but when we are looking for a new pet, we always go to a shelter. Some have had long happy lives with us while a few have had early, accidental departures or illnesses. It has always been comforting knowing we had done our best to give these creatures a loving home, knowing that there had always been that chance that they could have ended up someplace they were abused and mistreated. Without a doubt, you have given your old buddy the finest of care and love. He could have been not so lucky. Condolances.

Death of a dog
I definitely know the feeling.
We’re on death watch here with a 10 year old Australian shepherd. Lymphoma, I am living with it. She’s dying from it. And it’s just killing me. It’s like being cheated Running at the end of a twenty foot leash to having to stop and wait for her to catch up in 3 months. Not long until we make a final ride. |

We had a pug terrier mix,Sophia.one of the best dogs we had,16 yrs.We had to put her down also,I held her,her little heart kept beating and beating after the shot. We were crying our eyes out. Last year we lost our dog Annie in March, named after my mother. Then month later my cat Ginger. Then as you guys know my wife in August,42 yrs. Grieving takes time .I 'try' to remember all the smiles and good times we had together. Be kind to yourselfs.

My deepest condolences on your recent losses Drake.
I know from personal experience that words tend to ring a bit hollow when we go thru periods like this. I guess that's because they have to cut thru the numbing sense of loss we often feel during those times. Eventually those feelings of loss fade, then hopefully only the pleasant memories remain.
